Pope Speaks to Youth In Christmas Message CITY (LTD -PVI said in his Paul ope Christmas Day message today to the world that modern youth, devastated by the emptiness of world, are a materialistic turning to Christ. VATICAN The pontiff, speaking from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, said "unforeseen and yet predestined" persons were hearing the words of the Gospel. "They are you, young people, in whose generation is unmasked, almost with subversive ded you," the Pope said, pre "the Oenerations that inoculated you with the insanity of war for power, of materialism as the only justice, of pleasure as a confused attitude toward the higher duties and destinies of life." The Pope said "the emptiness, young people, has devastated you, and an intimate and powerful longing has brought you back, almost unconsciously, to the sphere of an invitation that cannot be rejected 'come to me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh : impetus, the exposure of the specious, at least insufficient, wisdom of the generations that you'." The Vatican estimated about persons gathered in St. Peter's Square on a bright, crisp Christmas noon to hear 90,000 the Pope's traditional message to Rome and the world. The pontiff celebrated mass inside the basilica before more than 30,000 persons, then climbed to the main balcony overlooking the cobblestone square to deliver the message. "... May God grant for today's youth and for all of us ... that the fruit of the Holy Year will be the acceptance of this word that is the expression of an endless blessed Christ-mas.- " the Pope concluded. As a first step in avoiding these winter driving accidents and traffic tie - ups, he urged motorists to get their cars ready for winter weather. "Half the battle is won when your car is in first - class mechanical condition, especially those items that directly affect traction and visibility, such as brakes, tires, lights, defroster and windshield wipers. "For better traction when pavements are slippery, good tires with good treads are the first essential. Snow tires are helpful for pulling through deep snow and studded snow tires (where permitted) are still better because of the added traction they provide on icy pavements. For severe snow and ice conditions, however, reinforced tire chains are far more effective. Carry them in your trunk and be prepared to use them in deep snow and glare ice," Mr. Baker advised. Gratitude for the gifts has been overwhelming, Mr. Lankford said. One mother called him twice in one day and insisted on personally thanking him for her family's Christmas. Interestingly, a few of northern Utah as a weak little storm surprised the forecasters and dropped one to three inches along the Wasatch Front. "Good visibility to the side and rear is essential in today's heavy traffic," he said. "Make sure your defroster is functioning properly, replace streaking windshield wiper blades, and check to see that your windshield washers have an ample supply of anti - freeze solution. "Most important of all," he concluded, "check your winter driving habits. Reduce your speed, follow other cars at a greater than normal distance and signal your intentions to other traffic well in advance of turning, slowing or changing lanes. Remember that other drivers may not be able to see and maneuver quickly enough to avoid an accident.
