Political VOTERS, KNOW YOUR MAN : I - I ,..,, J L. E. ELGGREN Candidate for State Senator L. E. Elggren a very able outstanding citizen, a Democrat and a dependable liberal and progressive, safe and sound, has been approach- - ed many times and asked to run for ofice, but declined. This ; year, however, he has been per- - j suaded to make the effort in i the interest of the public. Friends vouch for him and re-commend him to the voters as the kind of a man needed in the Utah state senate. He is a businessman but interested in all the people. In the fight j against power monopoly and : unfair rates he has been in the front ranks. At this very time he is making the people's fight against the proposed sale of the Traction lines. He has shown that if the proposed sale is made for $675,000 it would ap- - parently be giving away the property to some source not revealed, and prove a detri-ment to the Power company's preferred stockholders. At the price named it would be a j; ridiculous giveaway. He says the sale should be made to the highest bidder, in a wide open field. If there is to be prefer-ence it should be to a home concern. Because of past troubles with Bond and Share companies, Mr. Elggren would prefer local ownership, having the utilities owned by Utah people. Where the ownership is vested in a foreign holding company, as proposed, then the board of directors would become mere ... rubber stamps for the holding company. - As he has been the people's champion and advocate in this matter, so would he be in every fight where the people needed a champion and an advocate. He not only promises an honest deal to every one, tut proves by his character that as a pub-lic servant he could not act otherwise. He will make an ideal state senator. COMMUNICATION ON POLITICS, FREE SPEECH, PENSIONS Win. Waterfall I have before me a declaration signed by Wilford Wood-ruff and Joseph F. Smith in 1892, and a copy of a statement signed by Heber J. Grant, A. W. Ivins and Rudger Clawson in 1932, which states that the church is not in politics. There are some high officials who should take this to heart. I have lived in Utah more than 61 years, and have taken an active "part to help brighten the older people's last days. Let me again quote from President Brigham Young, found in the Journal of Discourses, Vol. 1:4. "I would rather be chopped to pieces each day, throughout a period of three score years and ten, than to be deprived of speaking freely, or to be afraid of doing so. I am not afraid or ashamed to expose and oppose iniquity of men though they stand in high places." A horse can be led to water, but cannot be forced to drink. It seems strange to me, how men whose incomes are many thousands of dollars can try and force the aged to give up the $30.00 or $40.00 pension that the State and Federal government furnishes. Would those who ask the aged to give up the pension, be willing to live on what the Church can afford to give? Liberation Has Begun! Well, D Day arrived and the Liberation of a crucifed and starved humanity has started in earnest. The famous Liberty Bel! proclaimed it as in 1776. Moscow people danced with joy. The captive people came with tears of gladness and shouts of thanksgiving. The president prayed in humility. Eisenhow-er invoked the blessings of Almighty God, while some congres-smen and some others were acting like snipers. They will likely investigate the prayers. Nq minister ever offered a more sincere and Christian prayer than did the President. Nearly every church held a special appropriate prayer service. God's truth is marching on! Liberty is coming alive again! We thank God that we live in this high hour of inspired history! God. our Father, hear us now As in prayer we humbly bow ; 'j Let the light of heaven stream On our sons who fight and dream, War and work to make men free-M- ake them feel they march with Thee! b BE TRUE TO HICHER SELF "The higher self is the embodiment of truth; the lower self is truth reversed. The higher self is justice, mercy, love and right. The lower self is what the higher is not.The lower self breeds hatred, slander, lewdness, murder, theft and everything that harms. The higher sejf is the mother of all the virtues and harmonies of life." "Fear and lust are the parents of every unholy emotion. Their children are Anger, ate, Envy, Malice, Jealousy. Love and Faith are the parents of every holy emotion and their children are Joy Peace, Goodness, Gentleness, Patience, Tem-perance, Hope, Brotherly Kindness, Mercy." What wonderful power, what radiance and newness of life people might develop if they always kept to the higher life that is possible for them. As yet the great majority have hardly begun to live, still in the kindergarten. Possibilitiesare endless. of Secretary of State of the State of Utah in accordance with Title 95, Utah Code, Annotated, 1943. Dr. H. A. Call Subscribed and sworn to before me this 3rd day of June 1944. S. W.. Pelligan Notary Public (Seal) SPECIFICATION To All Whom It May Concern: Be it known that Dr. H. A. Call of Salt Lake City, County of Salt Lake, State of Utah, being engaged in the business of Chiropractic adopted for his use a trade mark' described as follows: "UTAH DRUGLESS HEALTH ' CLINIC"' WAR BONDS CLAIRE STEWART BOYER HONORED A signal honor has come to Claire Boyer in having been asked to participate in a great educational experiment. She has gone to teach with Dr. Glenn Clark of Minnesota, who has been experimenting in creative education in his own college in St. Paul and in Cali-fornia, Colorado and Maine, has created a college course which recognizes the spiritual in education. This new college curriculum takes the sciences, the arts and the philosophies and relates them to the whole-ness of living. The soul of the student is not left out, to wan-der forty years in the wilder-ness and finding itself late in life, to say "Why didn't some-one show me?" She has been creating courses ever since she stepped out of the University of Utah and found the need for practical and vital instruction. She has taught writing in Salt Lake City at the Civic Center for seven years; at the Lion House, three years, creating twelve new courses and has held pri-vate classes. She has started a score of writers on their way to success. She has published hundreds of poems in maga-zines, local and national. Five thousand students have come under her instruction in Utah alone. She has also taught in California and Minnesota. Here is the character of one congressman who owns a millio-n- acre ranch and other big interests. He took we call it, tole $39 every month out of a page boy's "check and then when his mother exposed the steal he had the boy discharged. That's the moral caliber of some present day congressmen. - A PICTURE FROM LIFE'S BETTER SIDE We have seen a picture of a little laughing, golden-haire- d child playing on top of one of the big mortars left on the field by the Germans. "There's nothing on earth half so holy as the innocent heart of a child." There it stands, not old enough to realize what the awful gun was meant for, and entirely unmindful of the horrors of wars, with a heart full of peace and joy, representing one of those of whom Jesus said, "Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." If that gun remains where it is grass and flowers will grow up about it and singing, nesting birds will fill the hideous mouths of those six barrels. Curious men and women will come to look upon it and, in time, when the world becomes civilized and Christian-ized, wonder that man ever was insane enough to use such a monster against his neighbor. The dew of morn will be-sprinkle it and the sun rises and sunsets will kiss it every day while humanity hopes and prays that it and all its kind may speedily be melted in the furnace fires' and cast into implements of peace and, husbandry. Physically and mechanic-ally men have brought the world into a new Valhalla, but spiritually and socially poor, homely human nature is still in its infancy. . To the People of this Community Thb is a home front co.nniuni-qu- e on the most vital war action now in progress in every com-munity of the land the Fifth War Loan. This can be done if every one of us puts something extra of ourselves into the fight. No one needs to remind you that it is an American trait to go into a sprint with the goal in sight. We started this push June 12. Reports from every city and town in America tell us that the num-ber of individual buyers of extra War Bonds today has reached an unprecedented total. We all know that in addition to numbers we need fire power. Your extra War Bond is absolutely essential. The greater the stockpile of War Bonds, the easier it will be for us to get this war over. This very moment our boys are waging a struggle. Every additional War Bond you buy will play its part in the out-come. Last month's War Bond, last week's War Bond, yester-day's War Bond are already in the embattled foxholes. Today is another day for the home front just as today is another day for the boys on the battlefronts. THE EDITOR. Alfred Sorenson Progressive Jeweler 75 East Second South Jewelry, Watch. WE LIKE THEIR CHRISTIAN ATTITUDE We are exceedingly glad that once in a while we get some exceptionally good editorial reading from the Salt Lake Tribune. Recently there was an editorial on Hopes of Op-pressed People Pinned to the Atlantic Charter. We doubt if there has been anything written on that subject that has more of the human, Christian spirit in it. It touched on the prophetic and eloquently directed suffering humanity to the spiritual vision of the Charter. A more recent editorial was on Settling the Fourth Term Issue Without Adopting Enemy Tactics pleading with vicious politicians not to poison the atmosphere and to conduct a clean, dignified campaign. We give a quotation: "Certain newspapers never print one word in condemnation of monsters whose gangsters are killing our boys, devote time and space to verbal sniping at our own leaders in a manner strangely like that used by hostile propa-gandists trying to belittle the American form of government." fBuyWaioS I TOD A y For FuturcNccds: i WE WOULD GO TO WAR TO REMEDY THIS In Spain, as in every capitalistic country, there is a condition which we would go to war to remedy. One man, Juan March, almost as much responsible for the war as Hitler controls the whole land of Spain, the mines, the factories, and practically all production. He even controls the oil supply, munitions, and a good part of the navy. While he pretends to be in exile he still controls everything and his wealth is boundless. With him of course are a few of the big boys, financial monsters. He and the few live in luxury, never knowing what it is to want for anything except honor. But the people how about them? Throughout all Spain the common people are no better off than slaves. They are so reduced that many of them and their children are starving, never knowing what it is to have enough to eat or wear, and toiling like serfs through all daylight hours. Many hundreds of thousands are rotting in jails and torture chambers. Their rulers are Fascists of the worst order. A "religion" is forced on them that keeps them in ignorance and poverty. This system is treason to humanity and an unpardonable sin before God The Spanish common people need liberation as much as do other European people. We would personally go to war if it would help to liberate them. |
