The donkey and the elephant, ; i Lang suff'ring and discontent, ; Brake from their fetters free. : ; They had imgiled enuf Hot, political stuff j To make them long for a spree. ; ! 2. ; Under secret cover ; i They skinned one another And traded hides for disguise, I Exchanged slogans rusty '! For jokes and jibes musty And swapped their best sound- j i i ing lies. v 3. ;.; The donkey practiced tooting ': And kept up his rooting Until he was trumpet wise. The elephant brayed loudly And continued it proudly ; 'Til he won the merit prize. ! 4. ; ; Their fellows listening dumbly ' Swallowed the hoax humbly And turned their coats inside out. Without sense of shame i They changed sides in the ' game j Scarce knowing which slogans j to shout. 5. :! ! But the Unwashed ones awoke ; j And to profit from the joke ;l Stole the old Guard's central !j plan. : These Die-hards in their turn I j Hoping victory to earn .' j Swiped the cause of the com- I j mon man. i And of mysteries seven j On earth or in heaven i; The hardest one to explain ; Is the swap of the honk : Of the patient donk . ; ' For a toot in an elephant's , train. ! 7. ? ; And the imps below !
