Show THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 1978 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW. PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 1978 Educational Advisory Council Meeting Set for vice chairman. Karen Adams and Janene DuBois will be running for secretary. Elections will be next month, April 4. Members were instructed to nominate citizens to replace the members at large The Educational Advisory Council held a meeting sometime last month, and minutes kept for the meeting show the following activities. Principal Tom Larsen ex-plained programs being used in the Central Elementary. In an attempt to help students feel the sense of accomplish-ment and to improve their self image, counselors and teachers and tutors from 5th and 6th grades are involved in a one to one program. This program is entitled Title I. Grovecrest Elementary is also using the program. Four-th grade students have ac cess to the same program un-der the title of Title 4B. In addition to these programs, students from minority groups, those with language problems, social or culture, are receiving special helps as well as Indian students in the school. Resource teachers give help with all phases to students who need it. New Officer Candidates Chairman Neil J. Flinders announced the candidates for officers for next term. Max Shifrer and Richard Warnick will vie for chairman. Bert Lindstrom and John Phelon whose term ends. It was decided to make selections from each area in the com-munity (Manila, Lindon and east bench of Pleasant Grove). Nominations will be accepted for members at large and for officers at elec-tion time. Council members were en-couraged to study the can-didates and recommend others to serve. The Gathering Place Bonnie Mills presented an overview of the Gathering Place. She explained that it was organized in response to a need in the area. A descrip-tion of the activities was given as well as the myths and facts of drug abuse. Class Substance Max Shifrer suggested that we might eliminate classes without substance, reviewing class by class and teacher by teacher. Alpine District Policies were discussed. School Lunch Waste School lunch waste is a concern to school personnel and lunch supervisors. It was suggested that parents need to be informed of the problem. Parents are not only wasting their money, but risking loss of school lunch programs and funds. Next council meeting will be held on April 4, at the Pleasant Grove Jr. High School. Life Saving Course Will Start in Am. Fork on Saturday American Fork Swimming Pool is starting a life saving class of six weeks length that will start at 11 a.m. on Satur-day, April 1. The cost will be either $7.50 or $10.00, which had not been decided at press time. Instructor is Bob Krom-menhoe-and you can sign up at the American Fork Swim-ming Pool, or call 756-241- 9 for more information. UAW Regional Assn. The American Fork Region of the Utah Association of Women (UAW) was established at a meeting held at the American Fork Civic Safety Building. One hundred interested women attended a lecture given by Mrs. Naomi Udall, Utah State delegate to the National IWY Conven-tion, and participated in the election of the new regional of-ficers. The region includes Lehi, Alpine, American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Highland and Lindon. Mrs. Udall spoke about some of the resolutions adop-ted at the IWY convention. She informed those attending that women have the majority of the votes and challenged them to "match this power with equal responsibility." Mr. Udall encouraged women to "do research, become scholarly on the issues of today so that they can speak intelligently rather than emotionally." She cautioned that the "impact of the women's movement is having a great effect on our American youth." The Utah association of Women is an education organization dedicated to promote the exchange of ideas; to foster research and study of issues, rights, political activity, education, etc; and to encourage all women to become informed and involved in political and civic affairs. The American Fork region will be divided into small in-dividual study groups which will be involved in issues and activities that affect their own areas as well as matters on a state and national level. Those interested in the goals of the Utah Association of Women are invited to join.
