Viking center nate Clement jSpringville as he goes to the 3lndoor team opens with solid efforts The indoor track and field teams from Pleasant Grove High School have competed in two meets thus far in 2004, and they have come up with some outstanding out-standing marks in this early season. On Jan. 10, the teams traveled to USU's Indoor Field House for the Aggie High School Invitational. The girls' team took first in the 4 X 800-meter relay at 10:54:81 with Tawny Parks, Amber Gleason, Ashley Glea-son Glea-son and Kaylee McEwan. Gleason took second in the 400 meters in 1:04.00, Bind another second place was garnered by the 4 X 200 relay squad of McEwan, Janae McKay, Jessica Ker-nan Ker-nan and Callie Bentley at 1:58.9. The boys' 4 X 800 relay team of Brian Armstrong, Tommy Taylor, Brandon itManwill and Sean Thomas Even more pleasing to McAllister was the fact that most of those points came prior to mop-up time. While the Pleasant Grove offense cruised to a 20-point first quarter, their defense may have been the bigger story during the quarter. The Vikings didn't allow Springville to score a single point until the 2:59 mark of the period, when the Devils made a lone freethrow. Cody Bilbro led Pleasant Grove with eight points in the quarter as Pleasant Grove jumped out to a comfortable com-fortable 20-3 lead after eight minutes of play. Springville overcame their shooting woes in the second period as they put a small scare into Pleasant Grove by outscoring the Vikings 29-23 after suffering suffer-ing through a miserable opening quarter. At one point during the second quarter, Springville actually pulled to within six points before the Vikings proves to be too much for basket on Jan. 13. took second in 9:19:0. The 4 X 200 relay team took a fifth place in 1:43.8 with Troy Bailey, Armstrong, Ryan Hoffman and David Lindow. Bentley and Armstrong were named student-athletes of the day for the teams. Last weekend teams competed at Kearns in the Second Annual "Ice Oval" College and High School Invitational. The Vikings placed in numerous events and achieved many personal person-al best marks. The girls' 4 X 800 relay team of Gleason, McEwan, Camillia Frenzel and Parks won their second meet in a row with a time of 10:31.00, coming within four seconds of the outdoor school record set last year. The 4 X 400 squad of Gleason, McEwan, McKay and Frenzel combined for refocused and closed the half on a 21-10 run that included a Landon Hallman three-pointer at the buzzer. Hallman's nine points during dur-ing the period led all Vikings. Pleasant Grove emptied their bench during the third period with a variety of lineup schemes. Players like Alex Iorg, Jason Bond and Chris Hall all saw significant minutes during the quarter that saw the Vikings extend their 11- point halftime lead to 22 points entering the final eight minutes. Chad Evans' six points got high-scoring honors for the period. In the final eight minutes, min-utes, Pleasant Grove gave the entire bench an opportunity oppor-tunity to contribute. Hall's six points paced the Viking offense that saw 11 players score at least two points in the blow-out victory. Pleasant Grove had four Vikings score in double figures. fig-ures. Following Helquist was Hallman with 14 points of his own. Cody Bilbro and Chad Evans each scored an even dozen. Chris Hall's eight points were a personal career high. Tuesday the Vikings opened region action at Orem. This coming Tuesday, Pleasant Grove will play host to the valley's top-ranked top-ranked team, Lone Peak, in the only contest for the week. The evening will feature a varsity double-header, with the girls playing at 5:15 followed by the boys at 7 p.m. The Knights have surprised sur-prised everyone on their way to a perfect 13-0 record in the preseason. presea-son. The Vikings will have their hands full trying try-ing to stop Lone Peak's momentum. For those with short memories, Lone Peak will also have a chip on their shoulders after Pleasant Grove knocked the Knights out of last year's state tournament before it even got started. In a region tiebreaker game at Orem, the Vikings sent Lone Peak home for the season. IPS the second place and a fine early season mark of 4:19.19. Bentley took sixth in the 200-meter final (:27.51) and seventh in the 60-meter dash (:08.44); both times were personal bests and school records. McEwan placed eighth in the 60-meter 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 11.19 seconds and ran 11.05 seconds in the trials, also a personal best. The boys' 4 X 800 relay team of Logan Gurr, Man-will, Man-will, Thomas, and Verdon Walker took third in 9:40.78. Armstrong took third in the 400-meter run at 52.23 seconds, after a 52.19 mark in the qualifying qualify-ing rounds. Armstrong is the defending Utah state indoor 800-meter champion. Coach John Kernan said, "I continue to be amazed by our student-athletes' improvements. They work so hard, and it is paying off. "We took over 20 athletes to the Kearns meet, and almost all of them came home with personal best marks and improvements over the previous week. I think we will have a great track and field season this spring," he said. The next meet for the teams will be the "Bob Ras-mussen" Ras-mussen" relays held indoors at Timpview High School this evening. Competition will start at 6 p.m. This is always an exciting meet for the Vikings, and all fans are invited to attend.
