Show New Utah - Thursday, January 1, 2004 - Page 6 Search continues for missing canyon snowboarders By Justin Hill and Marc Haddock Utah Valley staff Search crews uncovered the body of one of three snowboarders Sunday evening who went missing in a series of avalanches three days earlier in the Aspen Grove area of Provo Canyon. Mike Hebert, 19, of Orem, who was part of a close-knit group that loved the outdoors, was found buried under 18 inches to 4 feet of snow. Hebert and friends Adam Merz, 18, of Orem and Rod Newbury, 20, of Pleasant Grove were among a group of about 10 people who regularly reg-ularly went on fishing, hiking hik-ing and snowboarding trips together. Merz and Newbury were still missing as of Sunday night. "I want to go up there and help find my friends. That's all I want to do," said J.D. Settle, of Pleasant Grove, who nearly lost his life in the same avalanches, speaking to members of the media before he and a small group of friends and family members of those who were missing at the site Sunday. Recovery efforts were suspended Monday because of safety concerns stemming stem-ming from the forecast of 18 inches of snow in the area overnight Sunday, said Deputy Dennis Harris, public pub-lic information officer for the Utah County Sheriffs Office. The situation will be evaluated every day and efforts will resume when feasible, he said. Hebert's body, which was taken to the state medical examiner's office, was found in the same general area on the east side of the slide where search crews uncovered uncov-ered two beanies, a backpack, back-pack, a snowboard and a ski pole. One of the beanies and the snowboard belonged to Merz. Rescue dogs from Wasatcn Backcountry Res cuers picked up the scent of the items and crews dug holes as big as 10 feet deep, 18 feet long and 8 feet wide, Harris said. Some 80 people Sunday were probing the slide area or digging the pits, Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy said. Another 40 support personnel were active in the command center providing food and other necessities for the searchers. As of Saturday night, 1,252 man hours had been spent on the search, including includ-ing personnel from the Red Cross, Summit, Davis, the Utah Department of Public Safety, the Utah Fire Association, Asso-ciation, the Provo Police Department, Provo Fire and Rescue, the Sundance Ski Patrol as well as Davis, Salt Lake, Summit, Wasatch, Weber and Utah counties. The discovery of Hebert's body was a "huge booster to everybody involved," Harris said. "We're just extremely excited," he said. The body will provide some closure to Hebert's family, Harris said. "We're very happy for the family, but at the same time, we're very sad for the family." Tracy hoped to meet with U.S. Forest Service officials today to discuss the possibility possi-bility of bringing in heavy equipment, such as snow grooming equipment or frontend loaders, to help with the search. Because the search site is located in a wilderness area, they must have the department's permission to bring in any motorized equipment to help with the search effort. Hebert, Merz and Newbury New-bury were part of a group that spent a lot of time together, said Craig Knight, a friend of Merz and Hebert who lives in the same neighborhood as the men. Knight was also serving as a spokesman for the families. fami-lies. "They liked to be thrilled," he said. "They liked the adrenaline of doing something exciting." Missing snowboarder's sister provides profile of local man When Rod Newbury and his family were preparing for the holidays, he asked his sister, Jennifer Newbury of New Mexico, to visit them. "It has been a year and a half since we had seen each other and he wanted me to come up for Christmas," Jennifer said, recalling their Christmas phone conversation. The next day he was gone." Jennifer was acting as the family spokesperson during the ordeal. The son of Vae Graham of Lehi, Rod had turned 20 on Dec. 25. He shared a Pleasant Grove condominium with his friends and was engaged to Kelley Pettitt, also of Pleasant Grove. Rod had his mother's ring reset for Pettitt's engagement ring. She and Rod were expecting a baby July 17. "My family called, it's so unreal that this is going on. It's devastating," said Jennifer. "I'm still in denial." She was planning on joining family and friends Monday at Sundance even though the search had been temporarily suspended for safety concerns because of the inclement weather. Rod has four sisters and one brother, Mario Dowe, Bobby Beachell, Wendy Rigby and Matt Newbury. He was born in American Fork, moved to Orem, graduating from Orem High School and a year ago, moved to Pleasant Grove.
