In his spare time, he worked on a parody of the Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy-type musicals. After doing a 15-minute revue of his material, he received such an enthusiastic response, he decided to pursue pur-sue the work in earnest. Several months later he was ready to launch "Little Mary Sunshine" off-Broadway. Many things appeared to signal disaster. It premiered the same night as "South Pacific," so the major critics went to the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical and let their subordinates review "Little Mary Sunshine." Sun-shine." Besoyan, who had to do everything from directing direct-ing the show, being stage manager, ushering and serving as pre-sales executive, execu-tive, managed to snag only $8.50 in pre-sale tickets. He was so uncertain of its success, suc-cess, he pulled 100 seats from the theater and prepared pre-pared for opening night. But the critics loved "Little "Lit-tle Mary Sunshine, and it was " an overnight smash, running for more than 1,200 performances. And yes, the 100 seats were hauled back into the theater. The whole production pro-duction is designed for sheer enjoyment." As well as providing homage to early screen musicals, "Little Mary Sunshine" Sun-shine" pokes silly fun at such archetypes as the impossibly pure heroine and the unbelievably handsome, virile leading man. Missing any layers of complexity, the bad guys are just that: bad guys. Deliberately corny, cheesy and campy, "Little Mary Sunshine" has a plot with a little bit of everything every-thing - as stalwart Captain Jim and his band of Forest Rangers come to the rescue of Little Mary, whose sunny disposition is only temporarily tem-porarily clouded when the inn she purchased from the sale of homemade cookies is threatened with foreclosure.
