As a means of introducing further diversification in the crop system of the spring-whea- t belt of tbe northern Great Plains area, the growing of flax was encouraged by federal and state agencies during the past two years with he result that there was an appreciable Increase In acreage over tbe reaverage. Tbe unprofitable turns from wheat growing bad made desirable. some such diversification other and wilt The prevalence of flax diseases and the lack of new wilt-fre- e land had caused flax growing to decrease, says the United States Department of Agriculture, so that the average production was not more than 10,000,000 bushels, or scnrcely more than of our domestic needs. Flax, therefore, seemed a desirable crop to recommend. Area Increased. As a result of this federal and state area in encouragement the seed-fla1923 was Increased to 2,001,000 acres and the estimated production to The average acre bushels. bushels, with a good price yield of the yeur, made the crop throughout These fairly profitable to growers. to Increase agencies did not attempt the acreage in 1924, but ouly to stabilize the gains made in 1923. Preliminary estimates for 1924 Indicate, however, that about 8,375,000 acres were sown, or an Increase of approximately C3.6 per cent over 1923. Much of this increase in the past two years has been on old land Instead of newly broken sod. This has been made possible by a better knowledge of the wilt and the production of varieties, especially North Dakota Resistant No. 114, developed by the North Dakota station. It was estimated that about 20 per cent of the North Dukotu crop was grown on sod and 74 per cent on older land. A method of growing flax and wheat as a mixed crop, developed by farmers In southeastern Minnesota, has been fully investigated by tbe department and the state stations and found to be desirable and profitable under some conditions. Satisfactory results with this mixed crop were obtained in conrather extensive experiments ducted In 1923 by the Minnesota station and by the department In cooperation with the North Dakota station. The mixture of the two crops holds weeds in check, prevents heat canker of the flax seedlings, makes the flax crop easier to handle with the grain binder, and at the same time increases the diversified cropping. ten-ye- lf one-fourt- h fish. It is essential, says Y. W. Shay, swine extension specialist for the North Carolina State college, that the live stock farmer understand the meaning of some terms which are made use of by the government In glTlng out information of which he should take advantage in planning his operations for auother year. On a fairly large farm, such knowledge may easily be worth several hundred dollars to him in one year. By the term corn and hog ratio is meant the number of bushels of corn which, at the average farm value, equals the average farm value of 100 pounds of live weight hog. If the average farm value of live hogs is $10 per 100 pounds and the average farm price of corn Is 85 cents per bushel, the ratio, which is found by dividing the price of hogs by the price of corn, is 11.70. During the last four years the corn and hog ratio has fluctuated from as low as 7.1 bushels to ns high ns 10 bushels of corn. The average for the last 15 years has been over 11 bushels. During a season of wide ratio It Is sometimes possible for a man to buy corn at the farm price, feed it to hogs and make more profit on the corn than the farmer who raised It did. That statement should mnke it clear that the furmer who devoted a little time to the mastery of the mean ing of the terms ami the 6tudy of con dltions described, and frequently forecast by them Is In a much better position to profit by future developments than is the average funner who goes blindly not always, ahead I Eradicate and Control Tuberculosis of Swine That It is easier to eradicate than to control tuberculosis of swine is the message the United States Department of Agriculture gives to hog raisers In a poster recently Issued for at shipping points, In county display farm bureau offices, in county banks, at creameries, and in other public places. Attention is called to the fact that tuberculous chickens and cattle are largely responsible for the spread of the disease among hogs. Tbe poster utges farmers who susin pect the presence of tuberculosis veterinarian state ask to the their hogs or the nearest federal Inspector to get shipslaughter house reports on their ments. They are also urged to burn dead hogs and chickens to ashes, prevent accumulations of manure aud old never bedding In bog lots and pens, all to cook to carcasses hogs, to feed milk products used as bog feed, to feed no slaughter house offal that has not been cooked, and to get rid of tuberculous hogs and start with a clean herd. two-col- or Feeding Garden Plants commer- It Is advisable to have some cial fertilizer on band in addition to the manure placed on the garden. Acid plowing or phosphate broadcast after five pounds per at the rate of spading square rod is a good practice where manure has been applied. Where no manure is available a high grade complete fertilizer containing nitrogen, be phosphorus and potash should broadcast at the rate of seven to ten pounds per square rod after plowing. About the only way to determine a fair price for them Is to compare their feeding value with some other feed for which there is a market.
