Show scare a few of the habituals out of the Marlboro Country. I read an article recently in the Readers Digest. It was written by a man who was confined to a sanitorium. He was waiting to die due to lung cancer caused by too much riding around in the Marlboro Country. He painted a verbal picture of the living hell through which he was passing. He was confined with many other cancer - wrought victims, hacking and coughing their lives away in pain and regret. He completed the article with a statement likened unto the following: Its impossible to explain to a smoker the horrors of lung cancer. They have to find it out for themselves. This place is the real Marlboro Country. I watched the late Robert Taylor on the late show recently. You know, prior to his recent death, Bob spent a couple of years in the real Marlboro Country. He had one lung removed but one year later they found that the other one was shot. They cant take two lungs out of a feller... just one to a customer. But getting back to that late show. I would guess that Bob was about 40 when he made it; just 17 years before his death. He was handsome, strong and healthy, but the only time I saw him without a cigarette dangling from his lips was when he was kissing one or the other of those two gals with whom he was messing around. He looked right smart, smoking away. Bob Taylor always did have a way with a cigarette, but they finally had their way with him. 57 isnt very old to be getting yourself dead. He could have had many years in which to enjoy all that loot that he accumulated, but one miserable habit denied Robert Taylor many years of joyous living. Do you remember old Hamilton Burger, the feller that lost all those legal cases to Perry Mason? He saw that Marlboro Country too and died a horrible death only a few years ago. He said: I didnt mind losing those cases to Perry; its the one I lost to the cigarette habit that I hated to "ROUND THE fcaTOWNbO by B Davis Evans Dear Reader: This is Marlboro Country and across the screen of your television set one sees a handsome cowboy riding a stout horse over a grassy range. A cloud of cigarette smoke streams out behind him. Or You can take Salem out of the country but you cant take country out of Salem. We see a beautiful young lady dragging a young feller by the hand through knee-dee- p meadow grass. They hesitate long enough to light up a couple of cigs then away they go. Everything seems so clean and fresh and that stinking cigarette seems so necessary to happiness. Color tv does a great deal for this type of advertizing. Its no wonder that so many viewers rush out and buy a pack. Its surely too bad that the opposition to these 'Killer Ads cant afford to fill the screen with pictures of a black lung or a lung operation in action. Hanna 798-681- 6 By Ruth Roth mrmnanannnnrmmrmnnnni Down through the ages people have for the most part worried about the loss of life. We sometime think that this fast pace we live is something new, but if you study the philosophers and sages and teachers centuries ago and on up to the present time we find that they were all trying to make the best use of their time which they possibly could and to accomplish all they could each day. These people and countless others have deplored the wasting of time. There are so many ways in which we can lose time if we arent very mindful of how we spend it. Seneca, a Roman philosopher, who died 65 A.D, once said, We are always complaining that our days are few and acting as though there would be no end to them. Our views on how we use time wisely or waste it varies widely. Especially is this true according to our age. Some folks can sit and watch television all day and not regret it, others will not allow themselves any time for such things because they look upon it as a time waster. Some people love to fish and feel that the relaxation of such a sport does them some good, while their next door neighbor may look upon it as a useless waste of time and energy. Many people take time each day to read and study books, poetry, the scriptures and such things. Some may view this practice as gross neglect of time. Some folks budget their time and know each day what hours are allotted for sleep, work, recreation, eating, visiting or anything they like or need to do. Benjamin Franklin said, Dost thou love life? Then " merely trying to be a bit logical and if I can influence only one person to kick that crazy habit, my efforts will be worth while. I suppose Im the worlds biggest coward when it comes to pain, surgery, and hospitals in general and its hard for me to understand that when we have just one body to carry us through this; rat race why more of us dont take better care of the only body we have. Life is hard enough when one is well without bringing an unnecessary illness on oneself. Now theres one way to keep from bringing on an unnecessary illness and that is to stay out of the Marlboro Country and if you have ridden into it, why not turn around and ride out? Marlboro Country reminds me of the feller from Texas who was unhappy with daylight savings time. He said that one extra hour of sunlight was drying up his crops. But I am speaking of the person who makes a habit of being late. I have gone to meeting where those in charge wait for the crowd. I have always maintained that prompt people should be catered to. If its time to start then start. If you don't start promptly, people get the idea that you arent going to be prompt the next time and will not worry about deadlines in the future. Start right on time theyll soon get the idea. At a recent meeting where the one in charge waited for latecomers I did some figuring. The minutes we all waited multiplied by the people present at the time the meeting SHOULD have started totaled four hours and ten minutes of collective UNDERWRITE YOUR 6 Spanish Fork 798-691- 3 - The View From Here time just wasted. Have you ever waited for someone who was late repeatedly? Do you have friends who put no value on time? For one who tries to be prompt and who puts a high price on their time I agree with Winston Churchill very much when he said, I dont gladly suffer fools, and I reserve a special loathing for people who waste sia FOR SALE -- do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of. There are various ways as we said earlier, to waste or lose time, but of all the ones which I worry about most and which upset me are the minuter which we lose and cant do a thing about. Some of these such as waiting in line at the checkstand, waiting at the Doctor or Dentist for an appointment, waiting in traffic, waiting for your order at a drive-i- n or restaurant, these things are just part of life and it seems, must be tolerated. Waiting for appointments when YOU had one is something I will go in to in a later column. But the waiting which really upsets me is waiting for LATE people. I mean people who are always late!
