Santaquin News Notes Mr. DIU Hudson Cook Mrs. Ev 754-34- Spec. 4 Ned Lynn Topham has received the Army Commendation Medal for outstanding performance in line of duty in Viet Nam. He received the medal from the President e United States. He has been in Viet Nam since Dec. 1 of 1968. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ned Topham former residents of Santaquin now of Spanish Fork. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Roberts. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Buxton spent the weekend at Salt Lake City. Mrs. Buxton attended a bridal shower Friday evening for her granddaughter, Miss Patricia Chapman, who will be married March 21, in the Salt Lake Temple. Miss Chapman is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A1 Chapman of Bountiful. of-th- Mrs. Delia White entertained the Friendly Eight club at Curts Cafe in Santaquin last Thursday afternoon. A hot dinner was served to eight members. Cards were played with prizes going to Eva Cook, high; Dorothy, Thomas, draw; and Ester Bussy, low. Other members present were Lillian Burraston, Evelyn Larson, Dee Christensen and Nellie Finch. Mr. and Mrs. Reed Peterson returned last week from a three month vacation in Tempe, Arizona. While there they visited other places of interest. home Mrs. Ada Gardell slipped and fell at her home Thursday which resulted in a broken arm and lacerations to her forehead. She was taken to Pay son hospital. Mrs. Gardell was to have been honored Friday night as the honor citizen, but due to her accident the event was postponed until a later date. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Matheson visited her daughter, Mrs. Wayne Carter, in Spring-vil- le last Wednesday. Mrs. Naioma Jermaine held family night at her home last Wed. evening. Eight persons enjoyed the lesson and a delicious luncheon. The Social 500- Club- met at the home of Mrs. Don Armstrong Thursday night where a hot dinner was served and a social evening enjoyed by the nine mem- American Legion Post 123 observed their birthday last Friday evening with a hot supper, a program and a dance. District Commander, Vivian Montague, and his wife; his vice president, Mr. Joe Wilcox, and wife were special guests. The Goshen bers present. Mrs. Elizabeth Kester returned home Tuesday after spending the winter months in Salt Lake at the home of a daughter Mrs. Edna Overman. Mrs. Pete Goodwine and daughter, Cathy, along with Mrs. Fred Hore of Santaquin, spent the past week at Grants, New Mexico, where Mr. Hore, Mr. Goodwine and his son, Jim, are employed for Centennial Mining Co. Mrs, Edris Wall returned home Wednesday from a two week trip to Oroville, California. She visited at the home of her children Mr. and Mrs. Elfawn Wall. She went by train and her son Elfawn brought her home. Larry Buchanon was transferred from Payson City Hospital to Veterans Hospital in Salt Lake City. His condition is listed as critical. He, with two other persons, was involved in an automobile accident in Goshen last Friday evening. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Buchanon of Visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Peterson last week was their daughter-in-law Mrs. Don Peterson of Las Vegas. She brought with her her mother Mrs. Rhoda Hudson of Provo. Goshen. Three boys from the Santaquin 1st Ward received their Duty To God awards Sunday night in Sacrament meeting. The boys were Glade and Bryan Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gaylen Peterson and Kenneth Shaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Shaw. The awards were made by Bishop Emerson Bradley. - Mrs. Tish Bellow of Riverside, Calif, visited in Goshen with her sister, Mrs. Ken' Matheson and brother, Mr. Talbort Fowler, and families. Mrs. Lillian Burraston was taken to the Payson Hospital last Saturday for tests and obervation. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Rathmann of Bountiful were dinifer guests Sunday at the home of Mrs. Helen Backman. Mr. George Steele was released from the Veterans Hospital last Wednesday after spending eight days for treatment of bronchial asthma. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Cook of Bountiful spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Bradley. The O.N.O. Club held their afternoon tea at the home of Elaine Nelson. Those enjoying the afternoon sewing and visiting were Elaine Kirk, Sylvia Steck, Mable Tiejen and Devor Sornsen. , The Ladies Literary Club were entertained Wednesday night at the home of Mrs. Erma Cloward. Mrs. Cloward gave the book review Dorian by Nephi Anderson. Linda Kay Hiatt also presented piano selections. Assisting with hostess duties was Mrs. Ellen DeGraffenreid. Mrs. Phylis Finch, LaVern Branagan, Lola Jacobson and Catherine Palmer attended a quilting bee at the home of Mrs. Ted Davis in Spanish Fork last Wednesday. Johns of 565 East Second North, Payson, Utah, is on duty at Takhli Royal Thai AFB, Thailand. Airman Johns, a weapons mechanic, is in a unit of the Pacific Air Forces. Before his arrival in Thailand, he was assigned to the 2727th Air Munitions Squadron at Hill AFB, Utah. The sergeant is a graduate ofSpringville Mrs. Joey Christensen of Goshen, resides in Orem. Sgt. McClellan has been in Vietnam the past ten months. Bishop of R.F.D. 1, Payson, Utah, is on duty at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai AFB, Thailand. Sergeant Bishop, a munitions technician, is assigned to a unit of the Pacific Air Forces. Before his arrival in Thailand, he served at Nellis AFB, Nev. The sergeant attended Payson High School and is married to the former te A. Collard. Hen-riet- Quentin Francom Two Payson boys met recently in Hawaii for an enjoyable visit together Sp 4 Quentin Francom, son of James Derwin and Velma Francom, met Richard Decker in Hawaii. Mr. Decker is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bryant Decker. The boys met in Hawaii while each serving special missions. Quentin is a squad leader in the service of his country serving in the United States Infantry and is on Rest and Recreation in Hawaii after having been on a tour of duty in Vietnam. Richard is on an LDS Mission for his church. The boys reported that it was wonderful to get together again. Gary Oberg Gary Oberg, Electronics Technician, Seaman, plans to leave Thursday for San Diego, Calif., where he has been assigned for service aboard the USS Galveston. Mr. Oberg has been stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center where he has studied electronics the past 14 months. His wife, Kathy, is remaining in Chicago, 111., with her parents, for the present time. Gary is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Oberg of Payson, with whom he has spent the past week while on transfer from Illinois. He was honored at a family dinner given Monday evening at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Don J. McCoy, Payson. Places were arranged for those mentiond in addition to his sister, Carol Jean Oberg, and his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Dean McCoy, and children, David and Duane. Monday, March 3, 1969, at the regular meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary, the 4th and 5th Grade Winners of the Americanism' Essay Contest gave their winning essays. Winners for the Fourth Grade were: 1st Alan Jones; 2nd Curtis Sorensen; 3rd Laurie Ewell. Winners for the Fifth Grade were: 1st Codi White; 2nd Karen Bishop; 3rd Guy Larson. The theme of their essays was Why I am proud to be an American. They each received a flag for participating in the contest and appropriately inscribed trophys for winning. Also that evening, an initiation ceremony was held and 21 of the 32 Junior Auxiliary members were initiated, along with 6 Senior Auxiliary members who had not previously been initiated. The meeting was attended by Mrs. Thelma Moriartiy, the Department of Utah Chairman of the Junior Auxiliary. A large group of Auxiliary members and guests were present and a lovely dessert was served by the refreshment committee for March, Chairman Reba Olson. Auxiliary President Betty Llewellyn conducted the meetingJSveryoneis asked to especially keep in mind the April meeting which will be on Monday, April 7, 1969, at 8:00 p.rn. in the Legion Hall. First W, Payson, Utah, is a member of the Scott AFB, 111., hospital staff that has earned the U.S. Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. The staff was cited for demonstrating the highest professional standards during a two-yeperiod. Osher, Wallingford, repairs t DODGE Demo Clark Brent McClellan has written from Vietnam that he has been promoted to rank of Sergeant. He is a son of Mrs. Dorothy McClellan of Payson. His wife, former Marcia Christensen, daughter of Mr. and B. Second Lieutenant John M. Wilson (wife, Maurine, 196 E. 2nd St. S., Payson, Utah) is in charge of the POL lab in Phi Bai, South Vietnam. Usually, this lab can recommend ways for battalion units to clean up contaminated fuel enough to be usable. That which is beyond cleaning will be put to use in some way usually as a dust control agent for roads. One of the more common causes of fuel contamination is leakage in the pipelines.
