We have a prime example of this type of pressure in a Central Utah industry. Men wi h as many as 40 years continuous service are forced to work with men with four of five years service on a reduced work week schedule. One would normally think that after faithful employees have accumulated up to 40 years service they would at least be given the opportunity to work 40 hours a week. Now we realize that production costs and business conditions have a bearing on the work schedule and they should do, but bear in mind hour costs will spiral wnon production is working 32 hours and a full staff of salaried personnel are working 40 hours. This personnel includes foremen, superintendents, time study, payroll, production checkers, or in other words all chiefs and no Indians. We nave bejn work! ig under these conditions since December of 19G6 and suffering at least a 20 per cent reduction in earning power. Recently when business conditions picked up instead of increasing the work schedule to 40 hours a week employees on layoff status were recalled and everyone is still working four days a week. The first thing people will say is that more menare war-inNow this is very true, but many of these men left other employment, and after all the company surely owes its older employees something. When management rewards long and faithful employees with this type of work schedule, pressure becomes very great and something must be done.
