He competed with Marvin Wilson, Kentucky, Robert Harms, Michigan, Randy Jeede, North Dakota, and Douglas Courtney, New York, as a team. Although representing Utah State Farm Bureau in an exceptional way, a young man from Maryland won the Discussion Meet. Utahns attending the American Farm bureau Federation Convention in Houston, Texas included Eldon Money, President, and Glade Gillman, Vice President, of the Utah County Farm Bureau and their wives. Mr. Money led a delegation of Utah County Members of the farm organization to the convention last week. The group toured the Manned Space Center in Houston, the training headquarter for the astronauts. Earlier Mr. Don Lind, a Utahn selected for astronaut service addressed a breakfast in the Savoy-FieHotel. Mr. Lind told of the technological developments that are contributing to a better standard of living that come directly from the space program and contribute to a higher standard of living. The surprise action required balloting by the delegates that wasnt expected until next year or later. William J. He said at the same time the farmer increases his productivity 6 per capita per person per year and declined to only 5 of national population. There is something magic about Christmas Eve whether you are under eight or over eighty. Everyone seems to have a special friendliness and happiness about them. As you greet friends they seem to sincerely mean the wishes for a Merry Christmas and truly feel interested and concerned about you, when other times they have been so hurried in the bustle of life that they may have been neglectful in even saying hello. Folks are busily engaged in thoughts of helping others and the twinkle in their eyes betray the fact that they have nice surprises planned for dear ones. For people of all ages there is small chance of much sleep this night. Many busy mothers will be up late trying to frantically finish last minute touches on doll clothes, fancy Christmas dresses for excited daughters, or turkey dinner items, or fancy baked goods to be wrapped for gift giving. Fathers may be working far into the night assembling the toys clerks promised could be put together in minutes. Often Christmas tree lights will choose this night to act temper mental and father may even have to make a hasty trip to the store for extra bulbs or fuses etc. Here he wiU find the stores crowded with bustling crowds anxious to get their last minute, shopping finished. At the opening session Wednesday, F rank Bohman, President, told 200 Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors that total resource planning and application is the answer to land and water pollution problems. Bohman urged the States 41 soil conservation districts to sign memorandums of understanding with county commissions to assist them in their planning. Bohman urged his fellow supervisors to take a lead in environmental activities. Soil conservation districts have a history of working toward improving the environment over the past 30 years. Dale Bateman, Chairman of the Salt Lake Soil Conservation District, in his keynote address told the group they should eagerly accept the role of watchmen over natural resources. Although environmental improvement means different things to different people, everyone wants pure air to breathe, clean water and productive land, Bateman said. A panel of seven state and federal agency representatives told the soil officials how their agencies could help get the job done. Everyone in the world likes to remain young except the young and before they know it they too will be yearning to regain their youth. We all get older day by day. (Now isnt that a trite statement?) But Ive had a hard time getting converted to the idea that the number of years a person has bounced around this old jolly estate affects him much, but once a feller hits 50, he is soon converted that every year counts against him. (He dies a little faster every day.) Physical culture exercises may slenderize you; diets of brown rice or sauerkraut may vitalize you; beauty parlors may decorate you with paints, oils and chemical's; plastic surgery may whittle down your nose and hoist up your face and make your eyes screwy; doctors may empregnate you with hormones and experiment with your endocrines; but youH probably come out the same essential You, ready, the moment youre left alone, to fall back into the same elderly appearance and elderly behavior. You know lately Ive found myself doing things that I use to see only old people do. You bet your boot, I used to think, nobody wiU ever catch me getting nervous habits, regardless of my age, such as pulling the skin under my chin, scratching in places that dont need scratching, getting upset over trifles. Taking more notice of the food that is set before me in a restaurant than I do of the waitress that brought it, becoming a little harder to convert to new ideas, getting excited about misdemeanors that my kids commit, things that I was guilty of myself once upon a time. Operators, central office personnel, repairmen and supervisors wiU be working to connect thousands of telephone calls. According to Johnson, the volume of long distance calls placed on Christmas Day runs many times the number placed on an average day. This means, he commented, that completing calls without delay will depend on when and how people place their calls. Last year, the company handled 502,720 long distance calls in Utah alone on the holiday. To help avoid disappointment in making Christmas calls, Johnson offered the following suggestions: First, he urged telephone users to place their calls in the middle of the day, rather than during the early morning and evening hours, which are the two busiest times on Christmas Day. He also explained that customers can speed their calls to their destination by switching dialing direct. High-spewill automatically select the fastest route for direct-dialcalls and will complete the call faster than an operator can inquire for available circuits. Utah telephone users may also use the Direct Dialing network to obtain a telephone number in any city in the country by calling universal directory assistance service. To use this service, dial 1 for numbers within Utah; or plus dial 1 plus the area code plus to reach directory assistance operators. Johnson reminded customers that lowest possible long distance rates will apply throughout Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, starting at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 24, and continuing until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 27. By dialing direct on calls, customers may call anywhere in the continental United States (except Alaska) for as little as 70? for the first three minutes during this period. should a government which is doing what it believes to be right allow itself to be criticized? It would not allow opposition by lethal weapons. Ideas are much more fatal things than guns. Why should any man he allowed to buy a printing press and disseminate pernicious opinion calculated to embarrass the government? Nikolai Lenin. - B. Davit Evans say it exactly in my words, but Ill give you the gist of his message: As a person gets older, theres a surrender to emotionalism or to more comfort. It is a mental laxity which diminishes the interest in active, competitive life and dulls the ambition and the desire to please. It is, in short, acceptance of old age as inevitable. Pretty women who have lost their looks often become negative in this way and give up all attempt to be attractive by any other means. This defeatism registers itself just as a physical disease registers itself in the face and on the body, in the voice, in gesture, expression in visible symptoms of decrepitude for all to see and talk about. And that unconscious slump into negativity, youll find, goes faster and faster as you indulge it. You scratch your head, yourre fatuous about trifles, pick your teeth, grow peevish, find fault, forget your table manners, talk with your eyes closed, yawn, mumble and drool. You dont realize how you appear to others and finally you dont even care. Food particles remaining around your mouth and egg on your tie are sure signs of getting old. Yup, December is most unfavorite month because Im one year older on its 28th day. Ill not tell you what year I was born, but I will tell you this much I was a mere lad but old enough to shed a few tears when I saw my older brother march away to fight the Germans in World War I. Merry Christmas to you all; I hope this message Ive left dont upset you. I didnt have anyone in particular in mind, except myself. Fast service. Fair settlement of claims.
