The tests give us accurate and anblased measurements ofperformanceonsnowand Ice, ' he said. , Few driver know, for tires, or reinforced tire chains this winter? Are they really any good, are they worth the money and bother, and which will perform best for me? These questions are posed to police and . traffic safety' officials many times each winter. As a service to consumers, and in the interest of traffic safety, Leo H. Barlow, Utah Safety Councils Vice President for Traffic was asked to comment on these widely used traction devices. His replies and observations are factual youll find interesting and useful Any traction device -- - snow tires, studded tire or reinforced tire chains that helps a driver to start and stop his car more safely on ice and snow is worth the price, Barlow said. At todays repair costs they pay off if they help a driver avoid even one minor fender-bendtype accident. But the own for his protection, should unbuyer, derstand the limitations of these devices. There is some concerned about advertising claims which lead the consumer to believe that all our winter starting and stopping and skidding problems vanish with the pur- chase of this product. But many accidents occur because drivers are led to believe they have a far greater margin of skid protection than is built into the device they bought, he said. He cited the findings of the N ational example,; that'iindings al thej, test- site at Stevens Point,, Wisconsin,4 .in' recent years show, that, conventional snow tires (without studs) are actually slightly inferior to regular tires, in stopping on glare - .ice. eye-open- er Jaleen Woodard, 8, Nephi, daughter of Jay and Renee Jackson Woodard, died Tuesday morning in the Payson Hospital of a lingering iUness. She was born June 15, 1962, in Murray. She was a member of the LDS Church. She was in the Third Grade of the Nephi Elementary School Survivors include her parents of Nephi; two brothers and two sisters, Scott, Jed, Jonna and Julie Woodard, all of Nephi; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Woodard, Goshen; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Jackson, Midvale. Funeral service were held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Nephi Fourth LDS Ward Chapel Burial was in the Goshen City Cemetery under the direction of Anderson Mortuary. , Contrary to popular belief,' the tests show that with, regular tires the average braking distance from 20 mph is 149 feet wherpas with snow tires on the rear wheels the comparable distance is 151 feetl , Drivers who think they can stop quicker on sheet ice with snow tires are deluding themselves. Snow tire $ do have advantages in loose snow and in getting started, how' , ever, As might be expected, the best performance on ice was be reinforced tire chains. They'cut the braking distance to 75 feet, a 50 percent improvement. He said tests with studded snow tires on the rear wheels made the stop in 120 feet for an improvement of 19 percent. . Conventional snow tires scored better in the puUing or starting traction test on glare ice than in stopping. Here they are 28 percent better than regular tires, whereas studded tires give you three times the puUing power on ice, and reinforced tire chains seven times, the official noted. On loosely packed snow, tests show that snow tires are 51 percent better than regular tires in getting you started, while reinforced tire chains provide about three . CARD OF THANKS I desire to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to my many friends and neighbors for their kindness during my recent sorrow in the loss of my husband. Lena Roberts the WANT AD WAY times the pulling ability of regular tires. In commenting on cornering and stability on ice, Barlow said nine out of ten drivers dont realize that when traction aids are used on the rear wheels only as is customary, they provide little help. In stead of the usual rear-en- d skid, the unprotected front wheels simply lose control , "Tests in recent years by the committee have reinforced earlier opinions of engineers that studded tires should be used on aU four wheels. The driver can feel the marked improvement in pulling ability from his What he doesnt realize, rear wheels. or refuse to believe, is that his increased forward traction has no influence on his until it is steering control or stability too late, he added. In concluding, Barlow emphasized that no traction aid is made that can perform nearly as well on snowy or ice pavements as conventional tires do on dry pavement. When the weather gets bad, drivers must change their driving habits. Your question doesn't give all of the information we need to respond adequately, but you must have at least the $40,000 of life insurance in your financial program. Probably you have more than that, from the tone of your letter. If you havent already done so, check with your life insurance agent or with the insurance company about naming your nephews . as beneficiaries in the amount of $10,000 each.
