Rocks were thrown at them through the windows of the old Tithing Office. When they practiced in the old school house built by James Reece; it was necessary to have someone stand guard. Brother Reece did this very willingly. These stories are related to show the difference between then and the present time, and the advancement we have made in our appreciation of music. The following history is by William Clayson, son of William Clayson Sr., the first leader of the Brass Band. This is the history of the Brass Band and the Silver Band until the date that it was disbanded. George H. Done wrote the foregoing history and read it at a reunion of the old bands held in the Payson Pavilion, Jan. 4, 1904. Shortly before this his son, Bernard C. Done, had been elected leader and continued as such for about 2 12 or 3 years. He moved to Salt Lake City and his Uncle John Done was appointed to take his place. He was the leader of the band until 1909. Before Bernard C, Done became the leader, the following members joined the band: John W. Clayson, George Amos, Alma McClellan, Wilford Done, Ivan Done, Hyrum Done, Ralph Done, sons of George H. Done, and John Done Jr., and Ray Done, sons of John Done Sr., and Louis Ellertson. The Silver Band was engaged to play for the G.A.R. encampment at Salt Lake City in August 1909. It was three hot days of The older almost continuous playing. members became completely exhausted One rather entirely. humorous incident is connected with this In the afternoon when we engagement. were about all in, the president of the Ohio Society came to us and asked if we and quit playing -- 'f SCHEDULE 0 would like to go to Saltair with them at 4:00 p.m. He phoned John J. McClellan and got permission for us to go. The morning issue of The Salt Lake Tribune announced that the Payson Band had been kidnapped. The trip to Saltair saved our lives, but the G.A.R. killed our band. The following members were business managers: O.P. Huish, Hyrum Brimhall and John Done, Ralph Archibald was manager for a few years and George A. Peery for many years. The writer was also assistant leader for both bands most of the time. The Silver Bnad filled many notable engagements from Mt. Pleasant on the South to Ogden on the North, and were often given the place of honor of serenading notable persons or on programs. William Clayson Sr., the first leader of the Brass Band, and George H. Done, one of its leaders, did more for the advancement of music in the early days of Payson than any other two men. Sarah Done Tanner, daughter of George H, Done, has added some interesting information about some of the band memWilliam Clayson Sr., the first bers. leader of the band, composed the music to many of the beautiful hymns that are published in our LDS song books. O.P. Huish, one of its members, wrote both the words and the music to many of the favorite hymns. Ray Done, son of John Done, one of the band leaders, recently returned to Payson to spend his retirement. He and his wife resided in Portland, Oregon for 30 years. Mr. Done recalls an amusing incident that happened on Paysons Main Street many years ago. On a Fourth of July morning, the Payson Silver Band was seranading the ciizens of Payson at 6:00 a.m. Some men came staggering out of the saloon, looked at the band carefully, then one of them said, 'Well, what do you know, six Dones and a pair of Claysons! |
