Show Gl loan benefit by W. R. Phelps The GI Loan Benefit is a valuable asset and every veteran or eligible service man should know what his benefits are and what he is entitled to under the GI Loan Program GI loans are available to qualified WW II with 90 days service or more, Korean conflict veterans with 90 days service or more, and post Korean veterans with more than 6 months service. Under certain conditions and limitations the Veterans Administration will make direct loans to veterans in designated areas. The purpose of this loan is for housing to be occupied by the veteran. Loan funds can be used to buy an existing home or buy a farm on which there is a home, or to build on land owned by him. Loan funds can also be Shortly after used for repairing, altering or improving a home which the veteran is occupying. Generally no down payment is required. At the present time the interest rate is 8 12 percent, with terms up to 30 years. The loan can be paid off at any time with-'o- ut penalty. There is no discrimination because of race, color, creed or national origin. (Exec. Order 11063) Time in processing a loan, including appraisal of the property, is approximately 4 weeks. In Payson Jr. High sponsors musical 9 oclock last Saturday night, Gov. Rampton walked into the Utah State Legislature and dissolved the two bodies with a short address to each. This last week had been a rather difficult one, in that the budget had yet to be finalized and the bonding issue passed, two items which had to be settled in this session. Too much time had been consumed over issues such as the Common Day of Rest Act, which could have been resolved in one veterans "The Bremen Town Musicians" sing ni concert, I to r, front; Herr Donkey Kenneth Bennett, Herr D6g Patrick Peckham. (2) Placed on referandum ballot for the people to decide this fall or (3) Deferred until the regular session. Two issues of interest to the public, which were brought to a vote inthe House, were a bill to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 years; and an amendment to raise the governors salary from $22,000 to $35,000 per year. I thought both measures to be drastic and voted against them. Still, I believe, however, that much was acomplished at the 1970 Interim session. Legislative report During the last week of the session I introduced a bill numbered House joint resolution 20 which recommendedthatthe27 mile abandoned DRGW Provo to Heber City railroad trackage be transferred from the State Road Commission to the Wasatch Railway Museum, a private group of Salt Lake based railroad hobbyists. These men wish to operate steam powered passenger excursion trains on this scenic line and who already have the equipment and financial potential for the operation. This measure, a great possibility as a tourist and business attraction for Utah County and the State, received enthusiastic support from the House, who passed it with a unanimous vote; but which was left to die in the Senate. The Senate also killed the House sponsored bill which would and streamline the entire funding operation of the legislature. Both of these defeats by the Senate were disappointing to say the least. W. R. Phelps, Leg. District 44 non-pro- fit Three million dollars was pared from the budget. Adequate education bills were passed for both higher and regular education. The bonding issue was handled in a package of 10 bills to insure the legality of and the marketing of bonds for political subdivisions, and school districts. The Governor expressed some dissatisfaction with our bonding bills, possibly because we clamped an eight percent ceiling. But with inflation still unchecked, we were fearful of interest rates soaring out of control. Might I add that this bonding legislation was made necessary by technicalities brought out in a United States Supreme Court decision, which placed in doubt the legality of some of Utahs bonding laws. some cases it impossible to close the loan in 3 weeks. The "Bremen Town Musicians is dramatized from the works of Grimm by Keith Engar, who wrote the book and lyrics, and Ardean Watts, who wrote the music. It was first staged at Pioneer Memorial 1. Theater Jan. The story is about four animals, Herr Donkey, Herr Hunting Dog, Frau Cat and Frauline Hen, who have grown too old to be of any use around the farmyard. The donkey is too old to carry produce to market on his back. The cat has lost her teeth and can no longer catch mice. The dogs vision has grown so poor that he mistakes the donkey for a deer. The hen has grown too old to lay eggs and even too old to fry. They meet in Germany sdeep dark forest, a land ruled by the wild animals and robbers and decide that it is better to starve with friends rather than be food for enemies. As they all class themselves as singers, the donkey as a bariton in two parts (the fore which sings, the aft which sits), the hunting dog an uncertain tenor, the cat as a Siamese contralto and the hen as a mez o cackle, they decide to go to Bremen Town to enter the local talent contest and to find themselves homes through their talent. Their musical selection, Berk Berk Madrigal or the Forlorn Fugue in Q Flat, may be beautiful to their ears, but to the humans who listen it is nothing more than four animals braying, howling, screeching and crackling. They are thrown off the stage. When a young boy comes to town seeking help to rescue his father from the cutthroat robbers who hold him and two nobles prisoner in the dark forest, none of the humans will leave the safety of their homes. The animals, realizing they have nothing much to lose, go back into the forest and frighten away the kidnappers with their singing. For their reward, the noble gives the animals a cottage in the forest and promises to keep them in aU that they need in exchange for one small favor: that they never sing in his castle. The cast includes University of Utah students Kenneth Bennett, Craig Cook, William Rice, Patrick Peckham, Peter Sorensen, Elizabeth Darley, Tracie Pastore, Pearl Walker, Linda Hammond, Sharon Funk, Florine Hansen, Kristine Pettey, Galen Chatteron, Bruce Robinson, Julie Evans, James Braecklein and Cyd Scott. 29-3- ARCH THEATRE Box Office Opens at 8:00 p.m. Show Starts at 8: 1 5 p.m. ONE showing Each Night Thursday, Friday and Saturday February 5 16-- 7 Fully U.S.D.A. tGUARANJEEDJEATS Cut Up Fryers A.
