in the history of the school 1 A despite the fact that the schools were closed tor for weeks because ot of the epidemic ot of influenza splendid results have been accomplished the past year the spirit ot of determination I 1 prevailing among both pupi pupils 3 I 1 and ad instructors resulting in harder I 1 eta aoudy dy and closer application in school work and in consequence lost time was regained park city A splendid program was render rendered ed every number 0 of which being thoroughly enjoyed by the large audience I 1 the address of welcome by the salutatorian calu james urie uric was hearty and well worded the valedictory by miss nora boyle clever and instructive the remarks by principal E W robinson in the presentation of the class particularly enjoyable because of the tribute paid the young men and women just stepping forth to dattel with the problems of ufa life the excellent advice given iten then them the high commendation of faithfulness and tenacity in school work since entering high school and the earnest and sincere hope tor for continued advancement and success in the years to come the address to the graduates by prof N A peterson of the agricultural college of logan was witty instructive and entertaining teaming with high ideals and profitable advice adrice for or the graduating class THE valedictory the following is the address in full fall as cleverly given by miss boyle classmates ladies and gentlemen you have assembled once more to witness one ot of the most common yet one of 0 the most significant things in the world the formal exercises which break the last school ties and proclaim the birth ot of the individual in ia each one graduating class today these exercises are especially significant tor for the demand for trained citizens is greater than it has ever been under present conditions park city is indeed fortunate in ill graduating so large a clas class stor for each now ready to go on learning some of US in larger and greater schools some ot of us in the school ot of life itself yet even with the bright dreams ot of the future and the support ot of lessons well learned we hesitate to one of 0 us feel that never before has any class past greater difficulties or faced more numerous opportunities than those we have past and are now lacing facing our high school course has been a very troubled one for that troubled restless spirit the war spirit which aich has of reached every corner the earth has been a dominant note in our high school life both social vid d intellectual pleasure in school have hav lagged for the high school has m not at feea been as formerly the center of interest for the town the school the town nd the nation itself have had 40 1 center of interest except that wrangling seeth beean tag e mass of human beings out i w a no mans land which has held ahe lie worlds fate in its hands and chile le the world has been waiting for the 9 outcome deome of 0 the struggle and alding aiding e by unceasing action that has miracles lilla cleb we who are graduating tonight and thousands of others have we been waiting also forced d into enact inactivity ivirty we have sat 1417 y by doing our minute share and i zing its smallness we have r bieard d the ebes echoes from that big S action in the outside world and j have we had no part in it we have seemingly b stood still while the nation curried ed pt past us and when that spirit 01 let et us now be up and doing swept U lic 6 country try we have answered no at we might ent s study ludy history of ages past world when the 1 gr greatest history in tho the alas belne being formed all tills this we w nave have done not gladly not fully of free will by 1 but encouraged on our those who wh knew better than wo we i friend fr parents our teachers and our I 1 we wish wih to thank them now for that encouragement ana to have them rejoice with us because we clung to those books which so many thoughtlessly throw aside for now we are ready tor for the new era the great era of reconstruction As the proposition is to the geometrical problem so BO the war has been to the great problem of 0 how to secure worldwide world wide peace and happiness As the proposition is so the war has been an inseparable part ot of the solution and a great aid to the solution but that is all the end of the war marks only the finishing ot of a small part ot of the work to be done before the problem is solved many ot of the thousands of 0 phases of this great problem have never been presented to us but the shortage of food and clothing not only in europe but in our own country the destruction of 0 french and belgian homes and villages the lack ot of order and stable governments the unfriendly relations between nations the crippled condition of many ot of our own and foreign industries these are things which are constantly brought to our attention the government is urging conservation ot of food increased production careful management ot of natural supplies and a thousand other things it is sending its greatest men to help settle many of 0 the other questions but the final solution of 0 the problem the return of peace happiness and carmony fi armony to the world will require years and not only years but men and women with energy and with education what is required is not a mere saving ot of food but scientific conservation not mere production but production which will enable a certain area of ground to produce twice or three times as much as formerly not the doing without natural supplies but the avoidance of their wasteful use and so with the other things we ne are urged to do it is not the willingness to do which will accomplish com them but the ability the science the education through which they are done the world needs not merely men but educated men As a result the great tasks to be completed devolve not only on the college graduates tor for their number is to small but also upon the high school graduates and there are great opportunities where ever there are great tasks to be done they also are open to us therefore in answer to the needs ot of the new era and in preparation tor for the great opportunities it offers we have gleaned all the knowledge our high school can give and are bid farewell to our high school life farewell we hardly realize what I 1 that word means to us now it means more than the dissolving of school ties it means the beginning of a new life tor for all of us the commencement of the great future the assuming of cares and responsibilities we have never felt As for those who have fitted us to assume these cares and responsibilities our teachers our parents and the patrons of our school we can only attempt to thank them and hope that their reward may come in our wise use of the lessons they have taught and the I 1 help they have given us and leaving our high school tonight we take with us as our motto the following quotation notation from the principal of a new york high school for the community which gives us tills this education tor for the state arate and tor for the nation which makes it possible to live as we do we must devote ura elves that we may be living
