Influenza or flu is a serious disease. It spreads when influenza viruses virus-es pass from one infected person to the nose and throat of others. It can cause fever, cough, chills, sore throat, headache and muscle aches. And, it can also cause pneumonia and death. Health care workers are most susceptible to getting infected and even spreading flu to others. It is important for them to receive the vaccine so that they can care for those who might become infected. We do have a very effective vaccine to prevent influenza, and no, you cant get the flu from taking tak-ing the flu shot, but you could get very sick without with-out one! Because flu vaccinations are under-used, it is essential that those who are high risk be vaccinated vaccinat-ed so that they will not contract the flu from those who refuse to get vaccinated against flu themselves. them-selves. These at-risk individuals are divided into three groups. Group 1: Those at highest risk for flu are: All individuals 65 years or older; residents ot long-term care facilities; persons of any age with chronic medical conditions; any child or adult, including pregnant women, who have a serious long-term condition such as heart disease, lung disease, anemia, ane-mia, kidney disease, diabetes, or asthma. It is also important for anyone who has had to see a doctor regularly, or has been m admitted to the hospital during the past year, to have the flu vaccination. Some individuals who have a compromised immune system such as those with a chronic long-term long-term disease like HIVAIDS, those who have been treated with drugs such as long-term steroids and anyone undergoing cancer treatment with radiationx-ray, or is undergoing chemotherapy, should also receive the flu vaccine. Others who should have the flu vaccine are children and teenagers, aged six months to 18 years if they are on long-term aspirin treatment. If they catch influenza, they could develop Reye syndrome which causes coma, liver damage, and death. Group 2: Includes anyone who has close contact con-tact with people who are at risk for getting a serious seri-ous case of influenza. Included in this group are: Adults and children who live with persons at high risk (those mentioned in Group 1); health care workers (doctors, nurses, hospital and medical office staff); personnel who work in nursing homes or chronic care facilities; people who pro AT YOUR Cress R. Open 365 vide home care to high-risk persons like home health nurses and volunteers. Group 3: Those additional individuals who should receive the flu vaccine are: Persons who provide important community services such as fireman, policemen, and restaurant workers; people peo-ple in schools and colleges (children less than 13 years should receive only split virus vaccine to reduce chances of side effects. The most common side effects are soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given, fever, and aches. These symptoms usually last only a couple of days. Most individuals have no side effects.) Also included in Group 3 are pregnant women who are more than six months pregnant, or have just delivered during the flu season, usually January through April; people who are traveling to the tropics any time of year; or traveling to countries south of the equator between April and September; and anyone any-one who wants to reduce their chance of catching influenza. H We do have a very effective vaccine to prevent influenza, and no, you can't get the flu from taking the flu shot but you could get very sick without one! You should also know that influenza viruses change yearly and that all of them may not be covered by the vaccine. Each year the CDC decides, based on scientific analysis, the three most prevalent viruses causing problems around the world. This year they chose ATexas, AJohannesburg, and BHarbin. The risks from receiving flu vaccine are minimal. For those who may wonder about the differences differ-ences between influenza the following may be of interest. Influenza is not SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), but the symptoms start out in a similar way. Influenza can be prevented by the flu vaccination, SARS cannot. SARS is caused by the coronavirus. You may recall the frightening outbreak in Asia in February 2003. In early March the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert about SARS. Over the next few months the illness ill-ness spread to more than two dozen countries in North America, South America, Europe and SERVICE days per year Board Certified Emergency Physicians Lisa Anderson, MD Kathy Atkinson, MD Arnold Finkleman, MD Robert Gannon, MD Kristen Jahn, MD Larry Orosz, MD Mark Paradise, MD John Silverman, MD Board Certified Family Practice Physicians Julie Dolan, MD Brian Rush, MD . After two to seven days, patients may develop a dry cough, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath. About 20 percent per-cent of the patients require mechanical ventilation. ventila-tion. Most develop pneumonia. SARS is spread through close person-to-person contact with respiratory droplets containing the virus. Close contact involves health care workers work-ers working with SARS patients and family members. mem-bers. For example, close contact would be less than three feet from the victim, kissing, embracing embrac-ing and sharing eating or drinking utensils. The virus can also spread when a person touches a surface sur-face or other object contaminated with the virus droplets and then touches his nose or mouth. It can take from two to seven days following exposure expo-sure to the virus for symptoms to occur. Approximately 8,100 people worldwide were infected, and of those, 774 persons died of SARS. In The United States 192 cases of SARS were reported. By late July, 2003, however, no new cases were reported and SARS was considered contained. Nevertheless the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the WHO are watching cautiously because at this point in time there is no vaccine, and no effective treatment tor iAKs. Some health authorities are concerned that cases of influenza and other respiratory respi-ratory diseases, particularly when they occur in clusters in health care facilities, could raise suspicions of SARS. This could in turn result in disruption of health care facilities as well as the costs. For instance, there would have to be investigations and precautionary measures like isolating certain health care facilities, against the spread of SARS among health care workers and patients. The CDC is continuing to alert federal, fed-eral, state, and local health departments to plan for a rapid response should SARS return this season. Remember that getting the flu is much more difficult to live through than getting the vaccine. You'll be glad that you did when the flu season returns. It doesn't hurt much, and it's over before you know that you've, been given your shot. Be brave!
