For the past year, club members have forged friendships and have played together and laughed together every Wednesday night. To celebrate its one-year anniversary, the Park City Bridge Club will host a reception in the Senior Center parking lot on July 25. Sammy's Bistro will cater the event, and club members and potential members will bring their own drinks, alcoholic or otherwise. "We'll have tables set up in the parking lot, because we're not allowed to eat or drink inside the senior center," said Shirley Wright, one of the club organizers. "We'll be outside from five o'clock until seven and then go inside to play after that." In order to make sure there is enough food, people need to RSVP to Wright by calling 6151417. The cost is free for members. Wright is grateful people want to come play bridge. "It's nice that people want to come because there are a lot of things happening in Park City on Wednesday nights," she said. "We have a wonderful time with a steady group of about 15 people and we rotate every four games, so everyone gets to play with everyone." Wright said the club is still looking for members. "We'll find someone to play with you." There are many reasons people have joined the Park City Bridge Club. One is to socialize. "I love the social aspect of the game," said Madeline Smith, who has been a club member since it started. "I also hear it's supposed to be good for the brain. At least that's what I tell everyone. I used to be stupid before I played bridge. "Another thing it does is help me with numbers," she said. "I can remember a phone number as long as I need to." Other people like Ed and Julie Fincus joined because they were new to the area. "We have been visiting Park City on and off over the years and just moved here a year-andhalf ago from Ohio to be with our children and grandchildren," Julie Fincus said. "We joined the bridge club as soon as it was advertised." It is also the reason Jane Peterson joined. "I was new to Park City and this was a great way to meet new people and make a lot of friends," she said. "It is a good social activity and that's why I started." Newcomers Fred and Harriet Kelner learned about the club from their daughter. "She saw it listed in The Park Record, and so we came," Fred Kelner said. Linda Hughes heard about the club from a friend. "I have a friend who I hike with and she told me about it," Hughes said. "I've been playing bridge for two years and have spent one year with the club. It's just right for me because I want to keep learning and I don't want to fall behind." Bettie Scarlet, who was part of the Park City Bridge Club organizing group, said the purpose of the club is to just have fun. "This has been a dream," she said. Unlike other bridge clubs, this one doesn't mind when teams member talk with one another or even with other teams. "We can ask each other things if we have problems," said Smith. The one thing the club would like to see is a group of younger members. "It would be nice to get young people off texting and into a card game," Smith said. The Fincuses tried to get their kids involved, but their interest in the game waned. "Our kids don't play bridge, but a couple of times when they were growing up, they wanted to learn but it never really caught on with them," Ed said. Still, he enjoys playing with his wife. "Even though Julie and I are bridge partners, we're still married," he said with a laugh. The Park City Bridge Club will celebrate its first anniversary at the Park City Senior Citizens Center, 1361 Woodside Ave., on Wednesday, July 25. Food and socializing will run from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and the cards will come out from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. An RSVP is required. Call Shirley Wright at 615-1417. |
