Show C-5 The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, August 14-17, 2010 ArtSpark kicks off fall sessions Sign up now for weekly after-school art classes Submitted by Susan Parker Are you looking for highquality, convenient, sequential art classes for your children? ARTSPARK is a traveling art school that meets at each of the elementary schools in Park City as well as Ecker Hill Middle School once a week throughout the school year. Taught by two experienced, award-winning, statecertified art teachers, Susan Parker and Anita Slevin, the program offers age-appropriate art experiences for grades 2 through 7 in a variety of media. Students draw, paint, collage, sculpt and work with clay in an atmosphere encouraging creative expression. Each class focuses on a lesson concept with the magic coming from each student's interpretation of that idea. Look-a-like, mimicked art never happens here Instead, amazing creativity blossoms within relaxed, inspired students. Parker and Slevin know how children learn and the kind of atmosphere needed to allow creativity to flow. Parker taught art in Vermont for 25 years, working with kindergarten through eighthgrade students and won teacher of the year for her outstanding teaching abilities and devoted service to children. Slevin has more than 30 years experience in education, has a Master of Arts in Studio Art and has won numerous awards including the New Jersey Governor's Award for Outstanding Teaching. Both women are professional artists and understand not just the teaching, but the doing. You can see their paintings at www.susanvparker.com and at http:///web.mac.com/anisle. ARTSPARK is sponsored by Spiro Arts at Silver Star. The mission of Spiro Arts is to promote the arts in Park City and ARTSPARK is answering that call with its outreach programs in the Park City schools. Research has shown that children who are encouraged to think creatively excel in all aspects of life. Taking the "bud" of an idea through to a finished product is a life skill that will benefit not just the artist, but any human endeavor.
