By ANDREW KIRK Of the Record staff Travel Health Vaccines operates out of Kimball junction By ANDREW KIRK Of the Record staff Gail Teasley wants to make sure you have a good trip. She's not a travel agent or a concierge, she gives shots. Teasley operates Travel Health Vaccines, a comprehensive vaccination clinic for the public in Summit County. Parkites love to travel. Many Delta Airline pilots live in the area, many businesses have international suppliers and distributors and many residents take exotic vacations. "I saw a need in the marketplace. People were all going to Salt Lake City for the University of Utah's Travel Health Clinic," she said. Teasley has been a registered nurse for 30 years and has worked in operating rooms, medical sales and even ergonomics. She says the variety is one of the great things about being a nurse. "It gave me the background to run my own business," she said. But one of the most exciting and growing fields in medicine right now is travel health. The niche has really grown in the past decade, she said, because more people are traveling, and therefore the risks are greater. Most diseases people get are from mosquito or animal bites, and unclean food or water, she said. Besides vaccinations, education is also an important part of disease prevention. Teasley uses special software to input a client's personal information and travel plans. The program helps her identify everything the traveler needs to know before, during and after their trip to stay healthy. The Center for Disease Control has similar websites available, and links can be found at parkcityvaccines.com, but they only allow a user to investigate one destination at a time and provide limited information. As all frequent travelers know, disease prevention - or sometimes just effective management - can save a trip from disaster, she said. Travel Health Vaccines accepts most insurances and vaccinating is all she does, so there's no need for someone trying not to get sick to sit in a doctor's office next to someone with swine flu. "We do one thing, and we do it well," she said. "Our goal is to make sure clients are well informed and get the required or recommended vaccines." People are encouraged to get vaccinations a month before leaving because some treatments must be administered regularly - like malaria medication - so the client should become aware of any negative reactions to it in time to make a switch. Teasley also suggests people carry a diarrhea-treatment kit \\nth them at all times since there's no telling when or where that prime trip killer will strike. In addition to diarrhea. Teasley also advises patients about motion sickness and anything else that could affect a traveler. She also said she tries to work with people called on last-minute business trips, so there's no excuse to go unprepared. Teasley focuses on treating adults and reminds them to get booster shots to avoid preventable illnesses at home. too. Adults who handle small children should be especially careful. Parents make sure they're kids are protected, but fail to protect themselves, she said. People over age 65 should bc vaccinated against shingles, and because of the swine flu scare, people prone to upper respiratory problems are encouraged to be vaccinated against pneumonia. She gets a lot of questions about a swine flu vaccine, but said researchers are waiting to see what happens with it in the southern hemisphere before investing it its production. This season's regular flu vaccine is already completed and should be available in September. Because of this summer's flu scare, officials are expecting twice as many people to get regular flu shots this fall, she said. Teasley does on-site flu vaccinations for companies wanting to keep employees healthy. She's also offering a 20 percent discount to people participating in the "Park City 5" charity group going to Ecuador next month, Travel Health Vaccines has: Hepatitis A, B and Twinrix, Tetanus, Diptfieria, Pertussis, Shingles, Pneumococcal, Typhoid, Yellow Fever Mumps, Measles, Rubella, Meningococcal, Gardasil, Influenza Japanese Encephalitis, Polio, Varicella (Chickenpox), Rabies Travel Health Vaccines Gail Teasley 1441 West We Blvd Suite 220 604-0250 [Manager £ National Biking Champion ountain biking, and from kids to endurance racers.0 It THE Bike Shop in Park City Additional 10% Off Patio Furniture (through 4th of July Weekend) Additional 10% Off Bicycles (through 4th of July Weekend) '08 Summer Sportswear 70% Off All Demo Skis and Snowboards Slashed $199-$349 *08/*09 Sklwear 60% & 70% Off A Over 60 years of bike shop experience!
