Burnett, who works part-time for KSL radio in Salt Lake City, captured cap-tured first, second and third places in the General Reporting category in an awards banquet held Friday night at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City. But it was her first-place entry that gave some people pause, because the report, entitled, "Wilberg Mine Disaster," was a production pro-duction piece Burnett compiled, using us-ing taped interviews from KSL's national na-tional affiliate, CBS. Burnett used the network "sound bites" because she was unable to personally reach people to interview. For several days after the Friday night awards banquet, Burnett was unsure whether the two judges believed she had personally conducted con-ducted the interviews, despite a cover letter explaining that the piece . Taking second place in the General Reporting category was Burnett's "Martin Luther King State Holiday" entry, in which Burnett took the additional step of finding a vocal opponent to the creation of the holiday as part of her report of a march on behalf of the proposed observance. "Most people would have just covered the march," she said. But Burnett said she always tries to present pre-sent the other side of the story. Her winning third-place entry was entitled "Isaac Stern." The success of that interview with the world-famous world-famous musician warmed the hearts of other broadcasters who work weekend shifts because it was a feature-type report generated on a "slow" weekend news day, she said. Burnett also shared in an award won by the KSL staff for the reporting repor-ting of Mormon Church President Spencer Kimball's funeral. She recalled that she was in the ,. helping with the election report when word came in that 1 Mormon prophet had died "It was a double-wham, challenge that night" as pulled together background views and reactions to the 'w leader s passing, she said During the funeral coverage Burnett was one of several reporw who reported, live from the scenes nf various aspects of the event the Tabernacle to the cenieff "When you go live, everything you say can be held against you " 2 said. ' e The triple-crown awards were the first individual recognition Burnett has received, although she shared in the staff award received for the sta tion's coverage of the 1983 flood and she received an honorable men tion for her 1981 coverage of the funeral of Clayton Conger, a small boy for whom Salt Lakers had raised money to pay for what they hoped would be a life-saving operation. Lodestar hires new art director Jan Wilking, publisher of Lodestar magazine, announced Friday that he has hired illustrator Don Weller as art director for the upcoming (Summer (Sum-mer 1986) issue. "We're very happy to be working with Don because of the quality of his work. We think he'll make a significant contribution to Lodestar," Wilking said. Weller is a native of eastern Washington State who says he always wanted to be a cowboy. But he found the open range all chopped up with barbed wire so he decided to major in fine art instead. Since then, Weller has become widely known as an illustrator. His work has appeared on the cover of Time Magazine and in a variety of other publications. With his wife Chikako (better known as Cha Cha), he founded the Weller Institute for the Cure of Design in Los Angeles. Weller's association with Park City began about eight years ago when he and a couple of friends began The Design Conference That Just Happens Hap-pens To Be In Park City, now an annual an-nual event. He and Cha Cha became part-time Park City residents six years ago, then moved here full-time in April 1985. Weller is known locally as the publisher and designer of a coffee table book on Park City and as the artist of the Summer 1984 cover of Lodestar. Both projects have won awards in design competitions. Wilking said the decision to hire Weller means that, for the first time in four years, Lodestar will not be produced by Great Ideas Marketing and Design. V Don Weller is an award-winning award-winning illustrator. "I have been very happy with the level of professionalism that Terry Hogan and Great Ideas have brought to Lodestar," Wilking said, "I will miss their contribution." He said the decision to move the production out of Great Ideas was done largely for financial reasons. "Last summer we ordered a new computerized typesetting system for the Park Record," he said. "It makes sense for me to use that equipment as much as possible. That led to the decision to produce Lodestar at the Record. Don Weller will be working with us as an independent in-dependent contractor." The Summer 1986 issue of Lodestar is scheduled to be published publish-ed in June.
