In this year's triumph, the Haggis toasted victory with a 26-18 hard-hitting win against the Muckers last Sunday in the finals at City Park. Eight teams vied for the title, now in its 18th year, including teams from Boise, Pocatello, Steamboat Springs, Vail, Breckenridge, as well as Salt Lake's Haggis and Skyliners. Pre-game opinion opted for the Haggis, Vail and Skyliners to be the teams to beat, but both Vail and the Skyliners fell to the Haggis in early rounds, 26-8 and 18-4 resrjectivelv. In the other bracket, Park City and Pocatello had first round wins over Colorado teams. Park City Ci-ty prevailed 32-3 over Breckenridge and Pocatello took Steamboat 16-8. In a sloppy, wind-hindered match, Park City evened the season against Pocatello at two games apiece in the second round of play. In a 9-3 match, some late game decisions by Pocatello not to kick may have made the difference as Park City denied them the try line three times on penalty plays. Pocatello's tentativeness was Park City's savior, as the Muckers took to the field Sunday in the tournament's final match of the weekend. The Haggis, a long-time foe, beat Park City in last Fourth of July's Independence match, 13-9. Matched with the fact Park City has never won their own Challenge Cup Tournament, you can bet emotions ran high for Sunday's competition. Haggis opened the scoring with a fine fly-half to scrum half move from about 15 yards out, scoring scor-ing on a weak side play. Park City answered moments later on a No. 8 pick-up from the 22-yard line and scored in the corner. Both kicks were good, tying the game at six apiece. In an odd weather development the wind blew from the north, giving Park City an early game advantage. ad-vantage. They managed a penalty kick before the half, giving the hometeam a three-point advantage. advan-tage. The second half saw Park City again score a try and penalty kick, but unfortuately they were unable to come back from three costly penalties made within the 22-yard line. The Haggis spotted the weakness and scored two trys to take the win. Once again the Muckers showed a very determined style of play and should be very entertaining during the fall season. They will host three home matches in the coming weeks, along with two games in Salt Lake City. Here's a run down on who played in last weekend's tournament: Peter Quinn; Roger Hawk; Sonny Sundquist; George Austin, front row; Tom Lauder, Scott Henderson, Hender-son, Steve Mann and Brian Lapo, second row; John Haas, (scored two trys) ; Billy Reid (scored one try) ; Brad Boozer, (scored two trys) ; Paul Carpenter, (scored four kicks) ; Mark Cotgrove, (scored four kicks); Packy Lennon, Jack Sherman, (one try); Mark Nolan; Jack Walzer; Zuke Garceau, (scored one try); Steve Creer. Also a huge thank you to the Reverand Coach Dr. Blackie Jones and all the other players, substitutes and fans who helped make this a very special weekend for Park City rugby. .
