All-State selections A total of six Miner football players have been chosen to the all-state football teams of the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune. That is the highest total Park City has put on the all-state lists since 1981. Fullback Eric Hales, who had a phenomenal year, totalling over 2,000 yards rushing, was the only consensus player chosen to both lists. As a further honor, he has been selected as the Region Nine player-of-the-year. Also chosen to the Tribune team were Clint Weaver and Bart Davis. Both were selected for their excellent line play. The other first team member of the Deseret News list is Brett Benson. Since the all-state editions edi-tions have not yet come out, it isn't clear whether Benson was chosen for his skills at tight end or linebacker. Finally, Scott Cartier was selected to the Deseret News second se-cond team at halfback. Good season everyone! Randy Hanskat by RANDY HANSKAT Record staff writer Sports give special rewards mentally men-tally both for those who play and for those who watch. It's that feeling of not ever being sure what may happen hap-pen next. This fall the Park City High School has given players and fans alike plenty to be excited about. In recognition of a job well done, the annual Fall Sports Awards Banquet was held Monday night at the high school to highlight those who lit up their respective sports. The girls' volleyball team had an odd year. It started off a bit slowly, but really came on. Then disciplinary distractions took their toll, and the team floundered through the end of the season. It was unfortunate to go out that way, since almost all of the varsity team were seniors. Gail McBride, coach of the team, gave out two awards. Tracey Montgomery, Mon-tgomery, one of the few juniors on the varsity squad, won the Sportswoman Sport-swoman Award. Holly Elkins took the Captain Award. The girls' tennis team started off its season fast, but ran out of steam a bit towards the end. Jessie Whitesides played number two singles this season, but is expected to take over the top spot next year in her senior season. Whitesides walked walk-ed off with Maggie Carley's top award, the Most Valuable Player honor. Chrissie Volla, the team's top player, was given the Captain Award. Sportswoman Award winner was Ali Salomon, and Alicia Thompson Thomp-son was deemed the Most Improved Player. Those fleet of foot were honored by cross country coach Bill Kahn. Kahn gave out two Most Valuable Runner awards. One went to Brett Hanscom, the only Miner boy to make it to the state meet. Hanscom was the top finisher all season for Park City. He ended up in 25th position at the state meet. Cheryl Hannay won the other Most Valuable Runner trophy. She paced the Miners with her eighth overall finish at the state meet, helping the team to a third place finish. Freshmen Jason Richards was the Most Improved Runner. Then it was time for the big fall sport, football. First, the junior varsity var-sity was thanked for a season of hard work. There was much to be proud of from that group. The. team went 7-4 on the season, coming out one point short in the state 2A semifinal football playoff game. Otherwise, it would have been only one of three Park City Ci-ty teams to ever make it to the state final. Coach Bob Burns called up Scott Cartier to take the Most Valuable Player award. Cartier returned kickoffs and punts, played halfback, and punted for Park City this season. He returned three kickoffs for touchdowns (had another one called back due to a penalty, and set up numerous Miner scores with good returns. Out of the backfield, especially when catching passes, he was a terror. The Sportsman Award went to Eric Hales, the Miner fullback. He was the most dominating player in Region Nine this season, and was voted the Region's Most Valuable Player by the coaches. His total of 2,000 plus yards was the second highest of any Miner in Park City history. Quarterback Rory Tatton was given the Captain Award. He led the team each week, with his strong demeanor de-meanor on the field. His strong arm became more and more accurate as the season progressed. Center and defensive tackle Mike Clegg was awarded the Most Valuable Lineman trophy. He anchored an-chored the middle of a formidable front. Finally, Eric Long, a junior linebacker, was the team's Most Improved Im-proved Player. One Region Nine honor, in addition addi-tion to Hales', went to Brett Peretti, one of the Miner cornerbacks. Peretti Peret-ti nabbed the most interceptions in the region this season. Burns also thanked a variety of people for this year's Miner success. Among them: Don Cofer and his player of the game award, which donated $1,100 to the Park City High School Scholarship Fund; TV 45; the Trophy Hut; Chris Eisenberg; this reporter (Yippee!); and all of the mothers who provided team meals for the players (the list of names is too long you know who you are) .
