Show Obituaries Michael Allam Michael S. (Mike) Allam, a Salt Lake City businessman and lay clergyman, died Sunday at a local hospital. He was 82. During his long business career, Mr. Allam owned and operated clothing and variety stores in Salt Lake City, Park City and Tooele. At the time of his death, he owned and operated the Middle East Grocery, 700 E. 675 South. Born in Lebanon, he migrated to the United States at the age of 21. He established the Lebanon Peace Garden located at Jordan Park's International Peace Garden. He was very active in Lebanese culture affairs, thus earning the title of "patriarch" of the Salt Lake City Lebanese community. com-munity. Mr. Allam was a lay leader at Saint Patrick's and Saint Ann's Catholic churches in Salt Lake Citv and Saint Judes Maronite Catholic Church in Murray. He was born in Ain-Ebel, Lebanon, July 20, 1900, to Gabriel and Hewlie Khorai-che Khorai-che Allum. He married Amelia Anton June 8, 1930, in Salt Lake City. Mr. Allam is survived by his widow, sons, Richard T. Robert M. and daughters, Mrs. Hal (Darlene) Myers, Mrs. James L. (Lorraine) Wright, Mrs. William M. (Pat) Snarr, daughter-in-law, Phyllis Tabish Allum, all Salt Lake City, 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. grandchild-ren. Mary Elaine Cook Mary Elaine Cook, head of the nursery departments at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Hospital, died Wednesday after a long illness. She was 44. Miss Cook, a graduate of the Brigham Young University Univer-sity College of Nursing in 1960, was a nurse at LDS Hospital from 1960 to 1981 , and was head of the nursery departments for 12 years. She was born Oct. 27, 1938, in Salt Lake City to J. Howard and Pearl Watkins Cook. . Survivors include a brother, bro-ther, Dr. John H.; sisters-in-law, Mrs. John (Barbara) Cook, and Mrs. Robert (Colleen) Cook, and nine nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert. Funeral services were held at Yale LDS Ward Chapel. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. The family suggests donations dona-tions to the LDS Hospital Deseret Foundation Nursery Beautification Project. |
