Show tiDMtiqnanriieg Joseph Martinez Joseph Martinez, who worked in the silver mines of Park City for 25 years, died on Friday, Aug. 31 in Salt Lake. He was 72. He was born Dec. 3, 1911 in New York City to Joseph and Benita Martinez, who immigrated to this country from Spain. The family moved west when Joseph was about 6, recalled his nephew, Park City resident Richard Martinez. Joseph's father was killed in a New Mexico mining accident in 1917. The family then moved to Utah, and his mother married Vince Zabarte. For a time, Joseph and his brothers stayed in the St. Anne's Catholic orphanage in Salt Lake, because the family couldn't afford to keep them, said Richard. "They had kind of a rough life. " Step-father Zabarte obtained a job in Park City, tecoming the first of four generations in the family to work the mines. At the .tge of 16, Joseph went to the mines, working with his brothers Alphonzo and Tony. ( Richard recalled that Tony died in the Miners Hospital in the Forties from the effects of a blood clot caused by a mine injury . ) Joseph married Bertha Storrs in Evanston, Wyoming on Aug. 29, 1947. He moved to Salt Lake in 1952, and worked at a steel-fabrication firm. Commercial Shearing, until retirement. But Richard recalled that he also stayed in mining until his death. Joseph worked claims of his own, or with a group of colleagues. His profit, rather than wages, came from the yield of the mine, Richard said. He is survived by his wife; son Ramon, of Las Vegas; brother Alphonzo, Heber City, sisters Mrs. Ken (Julia) Leggett (Richland, Washington) and Mrs.James (Mary) Brinton (Grand View, Washington) ; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Salt Lake. Interment was in American Fork City Cemetery. Glenn Seth Ridge Glenn Seth Ridge, a former mayor of Park City, died o:i Labor Day at his home in Coalville. He was 88. He was born Jan. 11, 1896 in Dongola, Illinois to Albert Pleasant and Minnie May Beggs Ridge. He lived and received his early education in Chappel, Nebraska. He married Nell May Peterson on Feb. 24, 1920 in Ogden. She died Jan. 30, 1981. After his marriage, he moved to Park City, where he served as mayor from 1928 to 1930. He began working here as a telegraph operator and agent for the Union Pacific Railroad. He later lived in various parts of Wyoming and in Echo, Utah. In 1969, he retired as the agent of Devil's Slide, Utah after 61 years of continuous service. He moved to Coalville in 1978. He was a Master Mason in the Uintah Lodge No. 7, F&AM. He was a member of the North Summit Senior Citizens, Union Pacific Oldtimers Club, Utah State Fireman's Association, and BPOE, Ogden Lodge 719 for 62 years. Ridge was a naval veteran of World War I, and a member of VFW . He is survived by his children: William A. Ridge (Omaha, Nebraska); Mrs. Theron N. (Betty Jean) Richins (Hooper, Utah); Mrs. Carl L. (Joan May) Sargent, of Hoytsvilie; sister Mrs. Oscar T. (Maude) Yarbrough (Grand Junction, Colorado); 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services are set for Friday, 11 a.m., in the Walker Mortuary Chape in Coalville with Bishop Lafe Bowen. officiating. Friends may call at the mortuary on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Friday one hour before services. Burial will be in South Morgan Cemetery where F&AM will perform burial rites at 12:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to N'-rth Summit Senior Citizens. |
