Bring the family or by Quicksilver CALL EDELWEISS Two events of note took place in Salt Lake which deserve a bit of a comment. One is an interesting new development while the other is a repeat of an old worn-ou- t story. Both will have some impact on the future of the theater in Utah. The first is a welcome development in these times of inflation. A Salt Lake theater is charging 50c a seat for any seat at any time, and, at the same time, is showing decent films. It obviously is an experiment in high volume distribution which will be closely watched by the rest of the exhibitors in the area. For the longest time, the trend was for the first-ru-n theaters in the metropolitan area to charge more than the second-ru- n theaters' They would get the difference because it really wasnt worth anyones while to wait until the film came to a second-ru- n theater. Now, the saving is anywhere from $1.50 to $3.00 a ticket quite substantial. If you add the fact that you can see two films for your price of admission, it makes it the best bargain in town for film freaks. Even if the dating set doesnt show up (I think cant take her there-sh- ell Im a cheap date), the financial savings might make moviegoers out of a larger segment of the population, the same segment which i$ getting insulted by the general level of TV. It wont bring back the golden age to the theaters, but it should bring more people out of their homes. The second event is that Deep Throat has been seized by Salt Lake County detectives. The film was grossing $1,000 a when it was closed down, and day that was at $5 a seat. Deep Throat would be just another pretty face X-rat- ed except that Linda Lovelace HAUS TODAY in the film which some people call obscene. Of course, there are always some people who will act as the brain police when it comes down to material which portrays a lifestyle that is mentally threatening to them. Ive never heard of a single print of a John film Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen, I doubt that either of them would pick it as the film that he wishes to be remembered by. A lot of Park City people will showed a unique talent that made most peoples eyes(?) pop out. A lot of guys are now being surprised by their friends Linda Lovelace impersonations. This throwback to censorship is exactly what the movie code was supposed to avoid. Everybody who goes into that film should know that there is some material be recovering financially from the two concerts which will be held this weekend, and it might be a good week to be broke, considering the choice of films. to turn the other continue cheek. I even know of a person who became physically ill when watching one of his films on cable TV. Im not advocating busting John Wayne flicks I just dont think that there is any argument for censorship since it is based mainly on taste. It is best to let the people vote with their feet (and wallets). The films that are at the Opera House this week are pretty standard stuff. Sugarland Express and Papillon are both based on real life experiences, and feature talented actors and actresses as the characters. Sugarland Express is another chase film, sort of like Crazy Mary Dirty Larry, except that it has its own twists and surprise ending. Chase scenes are easy to do, but hard to do well. The standard which most chase scenes are compared to is the chase scene in Bullitt ; an important reason the scene is remembered so well is that it became a focal point of the picture. In films that are chase scene after chase scene, the audience does not have a chance to savor the release as they did in Bullitt. Chase movies generally fail because there are only so many twists you can put in the plot, so the movie becomes old auick. Papillon has not received a great deal of attention from the film critics.
