Show it THE PARK CITY Wednesday, July 10, 1074 COALITION FageS PEOPLE Park Citys first girl to play in the Western Boys Baseball Association is this weeks Park City Person. On Monday, June 24th. Sandra Macklev. age 12. made her athletic debut for the Braves in P.C.s Little League action. Sandra was bom in Rawlins. Wyoming and traveled with her family to Park City in 15. The perky redhead has played baseball for the past six years but the games were always of the neighborhood variety which entail little or no organization. It was not until last month that the powers that be in the Western Boys Baseball Association voted to allow females to participate in their manly game. Since that time, Sandra has proved herself to be the equal (or even the superior) of all but a few of her male counterparts. It should be mentioned that the female banner was carried onto the playing field six or seven years ago . by Tammy Polychronis. At that time, however, the hardball games were purely local and were by any state or nationwide organization. To paraphrase an old' adage, like mother, like daughter. When the doors were opened for girls to play, Sandra was reluctant to plunge into the male dominated sport. It was Mrs. Mackley who provided the impetus which resulted in Sandras decision to be the pioneer. Years lfflli MTfJ I ago it was Mrs. Mackley 's dream to play major league baseball. Of course, in those days softball was the only outlet for a girls ambition to become iurt of the national pasttime Knowing the frustration of denied opportunities, Sandras mother wanted her daughter to utilize her athletic ability to the fullest and to "go out there and show them. Baseball is a family affair for the Mackleys and Sandra's coach is her brother Kelly. W hen asked what positions his sister plays, he responded, She plays wherever we need her. Against the Cubs, we put her in right field because Brian Yates hits long fly balls Sandra has played all the outfield positions as well as second base, but her most familiar spot is at third base. Even the oldtimers should remember what kind of of an arm it takes and what reflexes are required to man (no pun intended) the hot corner. Rated as one of the five best players on her team, Sandra expresses no preference for any one position and says she likes them CITY, UTAH HOT PASTRAMI BARBCQUE BEEF The name of this all-tifavorite speaks for itself, comes with potato salad.
