Court action on the 64 tapes which are being sought by Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski was delayed for five days causing speculation that a compromise was in the works. However, Mr. Nixon refused to relent and thus, may set the stage for a showdown in the Supreme Court. The chief counsel for the House impeachment inquiry, John Doar, is also unsatisfied with the evidence provided and is recommending additional subpoenas. Meanwhile, the House Judiciary Committee convened behind closed doors on Thursday, May 9th, for the initial presentation of impeachment evidence. Republican Senators Richard Schweiker, Marlow Cook, and Milton Young have called for Mr. Nixons resignation andthe President has responded by vowing he would never give up . The Mideast Secretary of State Henry Kissinger met briefly with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko on Cyprus Tuesday, May 7th, and then flew to Jerusalem in an attempt to formulate a compromise proposal that would satisfy both sides in the Israeli-Syria- n conflict over the Golan Heights. Officials were optimistic of an impending settlement when Mr. Kissinger returned to Israel from Damascus, where he conferred with the Syrian government. It was later stated, however, that the chances for disengagement were still less than 0 despite nine days of negotiations. On the basis of statements such as a movement toward serious examination of each others position and some progress is being made, guarded optimism seems to be Kissingers mood as the fighting passed the sixty day mark. face-to-fa- ce 50-5- gave the go ' ahead on construction for several projects which were brought before it. This final approval means GPCC can, after obtaining a building permit, erect the structure with no further review by the commission. Preliminary approval allows the commencement of construction once a building permit is obtained but requires a subsequent appraisal by the commission. Preliminary approval was also received by the Unionamerica Lodge. Commission opposition to the lodges proposed blue roof and a question pertaining to window trim will have to be resolved before construction can be completed. The Holiday Ranch was approved as a subdivision by the Planning Commission and 'this will allow GPCC to begin the sale of lots. However, prospective home builders will have to apply for building permits Sports The New York Nets captured the American Basketball Association 0 crown by downing the Utah Stars Friday, May 10th. Led by Dr. J., Julius Erving, the Nets jumped to a 0 series lead before losing their first playoff game to the Stars. They then rebounded to take the fifth game and the title. In the NBA, it took seven games to decide the championship with the Boston Celtics finally subduing the Milwaukee Bucks. Led by Cowens, their big center, the Celtics won the game in Milwaukee, where they had won two times .previously in the series Aitnough he had a substandard performance in the finale, John Havlicek was voted the outstanding player in the playoffs. In the Stanley Cup, the Philadelphia Flyers took a 1 series lead over the Boston Bruins by defeating the Bruins on Sunday, May 12th. In baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals hold a M game lead over Montreal and Philadelphia in the National League East Division while the Los Angeles Dodgers are V-- games in front of Houston in the West Division. The American League East is currently led by the New York Yankees, who are k games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles. The Clocktower Condominium project, which will be located at the junction of Empire Avenue West Germany Chancellor Willy Brandt of West Germany resigned Monday, May 6th, after one of his high ranking aides, Guenther Guillaume, was found to be an East German spy. Later in the week, another aide reported that he pressured Mr. Brandt, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, into resignation because he feared a sex scandal was about to be exposed on top of the spying incident. Helmut Schmidt, a Social Democrat, was nominated to succeed Brandt.
