Show COAUTION Wednesday, July 10, 1974 HIKING Jerri Page IS Take It Easy and Enjoy Ragland Youve packed, repacked, revised, and repaired. Are you ready? Are you set? Before you go, be sure to leave written word with a friend as to destination, route, and expected time of return. You can leave this information at the ranger station in charge of the area you will be packing through, if you would like. Whomever you leave the information with should, of course, be the first person you check in with when you arrive home. We forgot once and our friend had alerted the search and rescue crew by the time we remembered to call him. On the trail it is best to start slowly, find a comfortable pace and keep it steady; otherwise, you end up with various states of dashes alternated with collapse. Your second wind will appear after several dashes in several minutes, hours, or weeks, depending on your physical shape. There are prancers and prodders of the plodders on each trip. Remember that it is a must that you all stay together, sociability, but more importantly safety, requires that you try to adjust your pace to the other members of the group. For a hiker who is inexperienced, creaky cranky, or all of the above, there is nothing more disheartening than trying to keep up with a group that would rival Indianapolis. For those of you who are road runners and finckyourself sprinting way ahead, take part of the slower members pack loads (a great equalizer. Its also a good idea to trade leaders every now and then. Take breaks when you need them, eat often but lightly1, drink water frequently, and take a salt pill every hour or two if you are working hard. Once you have established your pace on the trail, stay on the trail! Dont take short cuts. You could get lost or injured, and the trail often does not go where you think it will. Remember the trail plan you left with your friend, who is going to find you if necessary. Cutting comers between switchbacks causes erosion by breaking down the trail. 50-yar- d Its a good idea to keep track of where you are. Watch landmarks such as peaks and canyons. If you lose track of the trail, get onto an animal track track, backtrack at once and knowing about where you are at all time will be a big help. Hazards on the way are a few and obvious. Snakes are really very shy and try to get as far away as possible. Wild animals are scarce and prefer to run away. Big Foot hasnt been sighted in this area lately, but dont test any animal with young offspring. Give anything larger or faster than you the right of way. Mules or horses or any stock can be skitterish at, the sight of humans with packs and strange paraphernalia hangings them; so, if animals of any kind approach, get off the trail (well off), downhill if possible, and wait quietly until they pass. Give a faster or smaller party the right of way if they want to get by. To beginners Cand myself still), stream crossing in some localities and seasons is really frightening. You may be able to jump a narrow place, but if in doubt - dont ! Logs, rocks, long alder or willow branches over a shallow portion will work - but they are slippery and unsure. Wading is messy but usually safest. Take your socks off and wade in your boots )this is one reason why we waterproof) ; then you have dry socks to put on afterwards. Sometimes a sturdy stick helps stabilize - if the stream is really treacherous, rig a static line as a handrail, and have the strongest members only carry packs across . Dont litter! Wayside trash is ugly; pack out what you pack in. We carry a lafge empty garbage bag and on the way out police the trail for litter others have left behind. The countryside along the trail is filled with beauty, fun, and surprises. Enjoy the trail, and at trails end you will be able to reminisce with those in the group, about all the adventures you shared. 64930S6 One & two bedroom, Three Kings Condominiums.
