Show Wednesday, April 17, 1974 Pages COALITION Chaplin Aids Volunteer Enrichment Program Last week local artist David Chaplin assisted with Marsacs Volunteer Enrichment Program during Ms. Carter Dreyfuss absence. Mr. Chaplin, who graduated from the University of Utah with a B.A. in Commercial Art, received his M. Art Education at Northern Colorado State University. He taught for seven years in Salt Lake City at a junior high school, was a Professor of Art Education for four years at Weber State College, worked in a summer art program for the Salt Lake Arts Center, for four summers ran his A. in , art school here in Park City, and also taught workshops in the own Dave Chaplin working with Ogden City Schools. In other words, Dave has had much experience working with many different age groups. Although he has been in Park City for eleven years, Mr. Chaplins first direct experience locally was assisting with the Marsac Program. He found all of the children bright and excited. Each and every one wanted to participate in the class a situation. refreshing For Dave, the basic goal of working with children and art is to help the child develip more his communication tools in students. head. Sophisticated materials arent necessary, jut just the op- portunity. Art, to children, is communication, for when art makes a statement, it represents a message. And, developing a system in' the child's head for communicating ideas thus becomes important. Often, adults are not tuned into that system, and. as a result, it is difficult for them to appreciate the visual products that the children create. What is important is to enhance the child's e so that he is confident of what he knows and what he can do that he is satisfied. that he himself can create something. It is imperative that the teacher says tell me about it rather than what is it. And indeed, all the children seemed to be enjoying themselves as they worked with wood scraps, cloth scraps, and paint.
