Show Wednesday, April 17, 1974 Page COALITION G Visit & Canyon, Hide a Rapid The narrow jutting walls of the inner canyon have formed a series of fast dropping swirling rapids which will thrill the beginner to the sport of whitewater and challenge the most experienced boatman. The best way to see Westwater is in a small oar powered raft with an experienced boatman. Many people run the canyon in one day, but taking two days and camping on one of the sand beaches allows time for hiking and exploring. In the Spring when there is water in the Little Delores River, a tributary, you can hike up to plunge pools and waterfalls for a refreshing bath. It is also fun to explore the remains of a few old mining camps with their dugout cabins and sluiceways. The gold dust is still in the sand along the rivers edge. Just do not be mislead by the abundance of iron pyrite, fools gold. With the snow slipping into the ground and the warm weather approaching, its time to begin planning for those Spring and Summer activities. One way to get away from it all is to take a whitewater float trip through one of Utahs many canyons on the Green, Westwater Canyon is in eastern Utah near the Colorado border just a few miles from Interstate 70. The Colorado River has carved an exciting canyon with portals of towering red Wingate sandstaone and sheer inner walls of black igneous rock. Yampa, or Colorado Rivers. Park City is no more than four hours by car from the canyon country of eastern Utah and the put-i- n locations of several river trips.
