Show Page 6 Wednesday, March 13, 1974 CUV A FINE FARK CITY HOUSE The Brown House was the first licensed overnight rental unit in Park City. Purchased by Bonnie and Ralph Brown in 1961, the evolution of the Brown House closely parallels the growth of Park City. The house and four lots were for $850. The Browns, residents of Salt Iake City at the bought time, invested borrowed money in the building on the strength of a proposed ski resort. It has taken $12,000 in materials and uncountable hours of the Browns labor to bring the dilapidated original structure to its present state. HUMPHREY In our effort to provide insight to all segments of Park City's population, the Coalition has initiated a series of articles highlighting various canine personalities. Humphrey is the dog were putting on this week. Interviewed at the fire hydrant in front of the Board of Education, Humphrey proved to be quite informative and interesting despite the language of heavy traffic forces him to take the Lewis Brothers Stage in- to Salt Lake whenever he wants to get hot on the car chasing circuit. Humphrey says that the time he has spent in Park City has been the most enjoyable in his five years of life. He further states that any resident looking for another place to live is barking up the wrong tree. Bonnie Brown recalls that things were so slow during the first years of operation that, We didn't know when the season was over. A knock at the door was more likely to be a bill collector than a customer. But as Park City gradually grew so did the Browns business. In retrospect, their $850 purchase was a shrewd move but that was hard for them to believe during those first lean years. The Brown House has hosted people from as close as Salt Lake City and from as far away as Norway and Tokyo. The comfort of this picturesque lodge and the Brown's warm hospitality have resulted in a large repeat business.- - barrier. Humphrey is a large Saint Bernard (is there any other kind) who has lived in Park City since last August. A native of Hermosa Beach, California, he says he enjoys the snow more than the sand because he can't find the buttons on his coat. Asked to elaborate, he stated that if he could get his coat off he'd probably like the beach, too. Humphrey revealed that he was not always the big, strong creature he is today. He once had vision problems and was unable to walk a straight line. However, with the help of modern medicine, he overcame these ailments. His problems stemmed from a small keg which burdened his neck. When the keg was surgically removed, Humphrey made an immediate recovery. Being a pure bred Saint Bernard, Humphrey prefers the finer things in life. Consequently, disdaining canned or bagged dog food, he can frequently be found dining on roast beef while sunning himself on the Resort Cafeteria patio. Humphrey has only one complaint concerning Park City.
