Show Wednesday, October 9, 1979 Page S cut1 SOth WEDDING j LETTER TO THE EDITOR MarsacSpeci ANNIVERSARY f October 1, 1974 The Park City Coalition Park City, Utah 84060 by Salye Stein There are some rumblings in this town involving the Dear Sir: Mayor Price is to be highly commended for addressing the problem of Park Citys urgent need for a full time medical facility. In 1964 1 pur- chased a future of our Annual Art and what I hear doesnt sound good. Hassles galore, lack of gratitude on the part of the merchants, disgruntled artists who've been juried out and juried Festival, considerable amount of new instruments and medical equipment for use at the Miners Hospital. I still have much of this and will be happy to give it to the city for use in a nonproprietary medical facility. Respectfully, William L. Orris, M.D. Teachers Elementary at Marsac attended a special media workshop at the school Friday, October 4th. Hie workshop was given jmm. DONT by Kent Ellertson, director of the Northeastern Utah Service Center, which is located inHeber. Two special programs were discussed at the workshop, InsideOut, and Bread and Butterflies. Designed by niss m National Instruction Television, the programs deal with health and career ISSUE education. InsideOut is a series of 30 color programs geared to help eight to ten year olds with health care needs. The series concentrates on communications skills, involvement of the learner and interacting with memorization of good health practices. Decision making is a key to the series with the aim of making the child able to develop a personally effective The Bread and Butter series is designed for nine to twelve year olds and concentrates on career development. The 15 programs are 15 minutes in length and based m two years of professional planning. As in the InsideOut series, Bread and Butterflies concentrates on the decisions a child is faced with in choosing meaningful work. The series recognizes that the individual and not the job description is the real life-styl- e. in dissatisfaction with the level of art exhibited, etc. Lets look at it mare closely. First, and foremost, do we want an Annual Art Festival? I would hope that most of us would answer this question affirmatively. On the positive side, it means a fun weekend, a chance for us to see what good artists are into, an outlet for the artists whove been hard at work for many months, a chance to put Park City on the art map, and last but certainly not least, an area of concern, and concentrates on the selection of goals in a person's life. Marsac Elementary receives the Bread and Butterflies and InsideOut series on cassettes, which are then me-producing receiver. event to Giv ! tin it helps. After with the ability to appreciate all, arent we the ones who . . .and buy. stand to benefit the most? On 1't HOLIDAY with stick ially-machine-made benefit. You may say to yourself, What the heck does she know? She's new to Park City and doesnt know or understand what we're confronted with. Well, forget it. I' know Utah doesnt have a reputation as a sophisticated art conscious state, but that doesnt mean the situation is hopeless. I'm betting that Also, the artists should accept the decisions of the jury LAST CHANCFT not mediocrity that sells. And for goodness sake, let's play fair and not stick in commerc- Park City from which all of us others, rather than rote f rs thing, inco- plugged into a television yj had so doggoned many potters, all of whom seemed to throw the same darn pots, we could have nicely eliminated of them. This didnt help the quality level one iota. Look, guys, look at the quality of the ceramics work coming out of San Francisco and other areas. Use your creative abilities. So, O.K., you say that only utilitarian, basic pots, etc., sell to the unknowledgeable tourist. I say, lets attempt to educate them and show them what can be done in this medium. It may take awhile far this effort to j.rove effective, but if you've got anything of worth in you, you'll strive for excellence and do your own creative three-quarte- without causing an uproar. Competition is a fact of life, and if theyve chosen to compete, they obviously accept this fact and should therefore stand by the final decisions. Relative to this, it is imperative that the organizers work conscientiously to obtain the help of a juror or urors who are highly &pected and knowledgeable in. the. discipline of art. It t seems to me that a juried festival is a must to raise and then sustain the quality level of the event. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. I guess there will always be those who would just love to have the latest Walter Keane painting or that cute little wooden plaque with the dried leaves, but lets go out and find that group who leave the state to buy good art. Im sure they're here. Let's get on with the business of organizing this Festival. We can only hope to gain by doing so. We may even end up with a reputation for excellence. So whats wrong with that?
