Show THE PARK CITY Wednesday, May I, 1974 nim Page CASTING ABOUT , i by Dave Mueller I HEAR THAT a couple of fellows have been down snaking em out already probably that Indian Permit again. Maybe a few of the debatables that I have set down this week will keep those excellent angling people home or in the bars where theyre supposed to be. I hate to see a guy y in the so and fish-itch- y a himself spring that he nets whopping day in court. stir-craz- FOR YOUWORM DUNKERS, heres a tip on how to make Olde Mossyback slurp up on days when that garden-hackl- e hes pretty fussy. Get the juiciest wigler in your worm can and wind him on your hook a couple of extra times. Then get a handfull of packable mud and squeeze that firmly around your bait, hook and all. Throw the whole gob (gently so the mud doesnt break off) into Mossybacks lair and wait for the current to eat away the mud. One of the good things about this technique is that you really dont need a sinker, and when the worm finally breaks free from his wrapping an extremely natural presentation will result. If you think this is a new angle to the angle worm, think again. The trick is mentioned in Izaak Waltons The Compleat Angler written in 163. Of course, Rusty Prudence was using this trick about five years before that. not-so-ne- w FISH STORIES MORE end with the lament: I had him GOOD on for twenty minutes until he got down into the fast water and popped my- - leader. There was nothing I could do. Well heres something you can do next time, pal, and then maybe we wont have to listen to your version of 9 the blues; you cant carry a tune, anyway. Alright, Iso; the biggest fish of your life suddenly makes a powerful run downstream of you into deep, fast water wnere your light tackle is matched against fish and current. Well... let him go. In fact, more than let him go, strip line as fast as you can (run, too if you possibly can) until you are feeling nothing but slack. Then strip more line. What will happen (at least sometimes but remember that the situation was hopeless, anyway) is that the line will get below the fish and form a big loop; instead of the tension coming from above the fish, it will now be coming from below. Your trophy, still miraculously on, will change course and come shooting back upstream... or at least hold his position while you gain line and get back below him where you stand much more of a chance to land him . It works. And it's a lot better than rearing back knowing your leader is going to break. elbow-to-elbo- MANY COMMERCIAL FLIES d so theyll look are PARK CITY RESERVATIONS down over-dresse- good to those who buy them, not the fish. About the only place where theyll prove to be any good is in a roaring rush of a stream where the fish dont have a good chance to see their food before it is past them. If youre fishing calmer waters, clip and pluck some of the dressing (sometimes as much as half of-iuntil the fly starts to resemble an insect form, not a dandelion seech t) w SPINNERS OR ANY SPINNING LURE with treble hooks can be deadly to any trout youd like to release. Tlie survival rates of released fish from the three major forms of angling look something like this: bait, 15; lures with treble hooks, 50; artificial flies, 90. So if youve and youre already limited-ou- t for fun and putting just fishing the fish back, clip off two of the & Condominiums 5 injury to the fish. Anyone who has ever fished with a treble-hooke- d lure knows how messy it gets when a fishs mouth is completely bound by all three hooks. HIGH WATER ON OPENING DAY is usually the rule here in Utah. And it plays hell with any fly fishing youd like to get done. Try seeking out some beaver ponds and you will find water that is reasonably clear. Chances are you will be hemmed in by thick brush and snags, but the fish will most likely be eager feeders and you wont have to fight the crowd on the major waterways. DOSS E . three hooks on one of your lures. Then the survival rates will climb almost to the level of flies. What it amounts to is this: the fish that get only one of the three hooks have a good chance to live, whereas those fish that get two or three hooks in the mouth on striking the lure are harder, to unhook without inflicting mortal BUT HERES THE BEST tip of them all. It comes from an occasional fishing partner of mine who would probably like to remain nameless. He says, You know when its almost dark in the evening and the big browns are starting to roll thats usually the time I lose my fly and find I dont have enough light left in the sky to tie one on and Im about superstitious carrying a flashlight: spooks em. Well, theres nothing quite so frustrating. as having all those fish rising around you and vou cant thread the hook-eyTry .this? Take your leader, and be too fine a leader but you dont need such a fine leader at and get about a dark anyway quarter of an inch at the aid and pinch it tight. Then take the eye of the hook of your fly and put it on the tip of your tongue and stab with the leader stub until you can feel the line go through the eye. It works because theres more nerve endings in your tongue than say, your finger, unless youve been drinking too much of that bad whiskey. . e. it-ca- ALSO older elegant homes find a place to live.... Having vacationed here during the past, they were familiar with the town and had seen its growth. Looking for a livelihood, they decided that running a radio station would be a challenging undertaking. Ed received his B.S. degree in Broadcasting from San Diego State and Ricks major at Long Beach State Comwas munications. Thus, last summer Ed and Rick did .some research into the procedures inseta ting up radio station. In response to some of the requirements, they spent the Fall taking surveys, determining, for example, the most pressing needs of the community. They then began filing the necessary papers with the FCC. Unfortunately, it takes about a year for applications to be processed and evaluated. At the earliest, Ed and Rick may be able to start broadcasting in December. They are proposing 18 hours of air time, from 6 AM till 12 midnight, and hope to include road condition reports, weather forecasts for the Park City area in particular, and perhaps some serials. (They are in the process e of tracking down some serials such as the Lone Ranger.) They also plan to include news, giving time ta tiatibnal events, 649-883- 8 FOR SALE - BY OWNER, 3 Br. 1900 Sq.
