Once outward symptoms do appear, the five-year survival rate drops from 75 percent to 25 percent. There are, however, a few simple tests that can detect the cancer early. ear-ly. The hemoccult test, which Henry, incidently, gave out as Christmas presents this year, is one of them. "My brother died of colorectal cancer 10 years ago," continues Henry. "They caught it too late. When he died, I began asking for a hemoccult hemoc-cult cancer screening kit from the American Cancer Society and sending sen-ding it in to Cottonwood Hospital (Murray, Utah) for evaluation." After nine consecutive years of negative screenings, Henry had a "positive" test. Positive results can v indicate other relatively minor 'problems. ! H own cancer On the morning of December 9, 1985, Henry Duehlmeier of Salt Lake City shoveled 18 inches of snow off his driveway. The following afternoon, he bowled with his friends. Less than one month earlier, on November 19, Henry underwent surgury for colorectal colorec-tal cancer, the second leading cancer killer in Utah. "I'm 69 years old and haven't had a sick day in five years," he says, "but I've used a hemoccult kit (a simple, sim-ple, at-home test that checks for hidden hid-den blood in the stool) regularly since I turned 60. My doctor says I helped detect my own cancer - and early detection saved my life." The outcome of colorectal cancer is often determined by the stage at which the cancer is detected. This may be the most important survival fact associated with the cancer and one of the elements responsible for Henry's quick recovery. "One Utahn has died of colorectal colorec-tal cancer every 53 hours over the past five years," says Steven W. Lewis, MD, vice president of medical affairs for Intermountain Health Care. "But if new cases can be detectd and treated earlier, approximately approx-imately 75 percent of colorectal cancer victims can be treated successfully." One of the greatest obstacles to , early detection is the fact that no visible visi-ble symptoms are present in the ear- Nonetheless, his doctor sent him to Cottonwood Hospital for x-rays which revealed a small tumor on his colon. Within a week, he had successful suc-cessful surgery and began recovering. Community members over age 40 are urged to write to Intermountain Health Care, Inc., Colorectal Cancer Screening Program, P.
