FRANKENSTEIN had the right idea, but it is too bad that he was so far ahead of his time. He was the first one to grasp the idea that the good parts of dead humans shouldn't be wasted, wast-ed, but should be used to benefit bene-fit humanity. Of course, he got a bit carried away with the idea and came up with a monster organized entirely from the parts of graveyard cadavers. cada-vers. Dr. Frankenstein and his monster were only creations of the inventive mind of authoress, Mary Shelley, but they brought an idea out into the open, as well as providing rich fare for midnight mid-night horror movies. Today, Dr. Philip Blaiberg of South Africa, lives because his failing heart was replaced with the vibrant, strong heart of' a young man killed in an accident. And now, one year later, many more people are living as the result of heart transplants. During the first five days of the new year, four heart transplants trans-plants were performed, three of whose recipients are alive today. On Sunday, doctors in Houston and New York performed the world's 106th and 107th heart transplant operations. INCREDIBLE AS IT seems, the day has arrived when the transplantation of nearly any organ or-gan or member of the body appears ap-pears to be within the realm of possibility. One day the most valuable partsof heroes and celebrities cele-brities may be preserved indefinitely in-definitely as they are transplanted transplant-ed into lesser mortals. Think of the thrill to hear once again the silver voice of a Caruso as his vocal chords are transplanted into the throat of a mortal with ordinary vocal chords! Contemplate. the marvelous mar-velous extension of talent that would be possible by transplanting transplant-ing the hands ofa Michae'ang-elo Michae'ang-elo onto the arms of a young house painter! The possibilities are unlimited. un-limited. The heart of a hero could be transplanted into the breast of a coward, changing his life forever! The lungs of a great racer could be transplanted transplant-ed into the chest of an ordinary jogger to carry him to new records rec-ords of speed 'and endurance. The feet of a Nijinsky could be transplanted onto the legs of a square-dancer, propelling him to new heights of the terpsichorean art. The brain of an Einstein could be transplanted into the head of Mr. America, making him the healthiest, most intellectual man in the world. IF ALL THIS sounds farfetched, far-fetched, remember, so did the transplanting of hearcs sound like something out of Frankenstein just a few months ago. Who knows what heights the surgeon's skill might take him in the future. As for any of my vital parts that are still in good working order after I'm gone, I hereby bequeath any and all of them to medical science under the Utah Uniform Anatomical Gift Act which the next Utah State Legislature Leg-islature is expected to pass. But, doctor. Don't look too hard for my tonsils and appendix. Someone else beat you to them!
