MEMBER: Utah Slala Prtu Association Subscription HatMi One year, in advance 13-00 TIIE ELUSIVE DUTTERFLY WE VOTE "AYE" We'd like to be the first to cast our editorial vote for Bob Bullock's proposal that the county issue $5,000,-000 $5,000,-000 in bonds for the construction in the county of a network of sewage disposal units which will end the pollution of Utah Lake. The bonds to be paid for by a two-mill general county tax levy. Five million dollars "ain't hay," and thhe increasing increas-ing of taxes isn't popular, but Bullock's proposal is the only direct way of getting the job done and is as fair as half a dozen other plans which have been suggested. If the job is left in the hands of cities and towns, you and I will never live to see fishing in Utah Lake. If the county problem is solved as a unit by the county then the job could be completed within four or five years and the lake could be on its way to becoming the recreation center of Utah. It would become at once a "Greater Utah Valley." As Bullock points out: "We are going to have to pay for it, and it matters not much what agency taxes us. It is still going to come out of our pockets." NMittiHiiuimiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiMiiminimiiiiin BALLOONS OF FRIENDSHIP John Allan May, staff correspondent of the Christian "Science Monitor wrote from London ecently a story a-bout a-bout Marshall Plan balloons. It sounded good. It seems that from Marshall Plan exhibits in London, Paris and elsewhere in Europe, balloon are available which individuals may send into the air carrying a message. mess-age. The particular message which these balloons carry as they are released by exhibit visitors into the air of Europe, to be blown wherever the wind of the moment listeth, goes thus : "This balloos brings you a-friendly greeting from another an-other European who, visiting the mobile Marshall Plan in the town whose name is on the other side of this card, has released this balloon as a symbol of freedom. "Just as this balloon has flown freely over cities and countries, merchandise and goods will one day move across the countries of a unified and prosperous Europe. "In such a Europe, tariff barriers and obstacles, to trade will be diminished, curencies will be freely convertible, con-vertible, and all men will have work producing the good3 needed by other Europeans. 'Terhaps you will soon have the chance to visit the same exhibit in your area. You yourself can then release re-lease a balloon to carry your friendly greeting to other Europeans." The iron curtain is not very tall. aiuifiiuiiiiiimmiiiiiiiniiiiiiitmmiiimiiini MO.VE THE SURPLUS FOODS! No one will begrudge a weary Congress its desire to finish its work in the next six weeks and go home. But we submit that its work will not be finished if it does not act in this session to dispose effectively of the nearly two billion dollars worth of surplus foods now wasting away in caves and warehouses. . Consider: the eggs, butter, cheese, dried milk, poultry and other products bought by the govenment ta help farmers maintain prices are rolling up a storage bill of $237,000 every day for U. S. taxpayers. Consider: while this is happening, millions of people in Europe and Asia face hunger (and indeed, in countless cases, actual starvation) starv-ation) for want of these very foods.
