Approximately Approximate-ly 40 different local community service agencies and nonprofit organizations set up informational informa-tional displays and encouraged those attending the fair to learn more and sign on. "When you open your eyes and you see one opportunity 10 more open up," said Utah Army National Guard Sgt. Jill Stevens, crowned Miss Utah 2007-2008, who was on hand to sign autographs and speak on emergency preparedness. She said Utah has the highest levels of volunteerism in the nation. "I love giving back," said Stevens. Bernell Evans of Payson was busy recruiting help for the Utah County Fair to be held in Spanish Fork Aug. 13-16, 2008. Evans himself was enlisted to Beekeeping Continued from Page 2 zat ion's membership needed a youth movement to recruit a new generation of beekeeper hobbyists, Shelley and others took a page out of the Future Farmers of America playbook and patterned their program after the concept of the Catch a Calf introductory bovine program. One was a provision provi-sion that an occupant would be required to demonstrate sobriety for 30 days before admission to a group home by submitting to a urinalysis test once every three days a requirement re-quirement deemed "onerous" by the representative. "He (Harmer) asked if 1 would get volunteers and coordinate co-ordinate it, so I've got a lot to do," Evans said. "Spend the Summer With Us," beckoned a colorful display dis-play by SCERA, highlighting programs such as the SCERA Youth Artists, Youth Media Lab, National Youth Theater Festival, SCERA Youth Theatre, The-atre, and children's choirs. "We love our volunteers," said Valeria Pahl of Saratoga Springs, volunteer coordinator coordina-tor for Thanksgiving Point. "Volunteers staff all of our public events throughout the year." Friday's Kids is an organization organi-zation that provides respite services to families of children with disabilities. "We watch children with special needs so parents can get a break," said Amy Cor-pron Cor-pron of Lehi. The mother of a child with autism, Corpron said she knows firsthand how im and this year 14 enrolled. All participants received bees, portions por-tions of hive and equipment to get started, he said. "It's a fun time for them," he said. Shelley said the beauty of the beekeeping hobby is that it's low maintenance, high reward The Utah County average for per hive honey extraction is 45 pounds annually. A typical family fam-ily consumes about 15 pounds of honey a year. Many in the organization sell their harvest for extra income or use the week during the 30 days prior to admittance. A second legal concern was that the city might be violating violat-ing the privacy of applicants when checking records. Earl suggested adding language that nothing in the law should be construed to violate any resident's right of privacy. The City Council adopted both changes. A number of Orem residents expressed opposition op-position to the city's approval of the homes. The Orem-based Habitat for Humanity has "all sorts of opportunities," op-portunities," said volunteer coordinator co-ordinator Rachel Wyatt, from assisting with the actual construction con-struction of a home, to helping with fundraising or serving on committees. As part of its fundraising, Habitat for Humanity has a store that sells home improvement improve-ment supplies. It is located at 626 N. Freedom Boulevard in Provo, and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Patrons can purchase new and "gently used" building materials at a discount. The store has been operating for about a year, Wyatt said. Barbara Leavitt of Orem works with United Way of Utah County's "Welcome Baby" program a home visitation program to help new parents face the uncertainties that come from raising a child. Kids On the Move is an Orem-based non-profit organization orga-nization that provides support honey as a dependable source of food and for food storage. "Utah is the largest consumer con-sumer of honey in the nation," he said. Beekeepers in Utah mast be licensed and Shelley recommends recom-mends new beekeepers check with their city before setting up a hive. Though each hive can house up to 80.000 bees, he said, even in a neighborhood setting, it doesn't seem like there's any more bees than a standard garden would attract. "They're generally 15 feet into his neighborhood, and noted that very few of the homes' residents would be local lo-cal or even from Utah. "Places have been completely complete-ly overrun by sober living homes." he said. James Robison deemed the matter "a sensitive situation." noting that residents were not trying to be unkind, he said. "Your home is your sanctuary. sanctu-ary. ... Here, everyone knows people, for blocks on end." Darin dark, a business owner own-er who plans to operate one of the homes, said those stav For the sake of free speech f I were going to place a public pub-lic monument to anything, one of the last places I would choose to do it is in Pleasant Grove's Pioneer Park, where Pleasant Grove allowed the Fraternal Order of Eagles to put up a Ten Commandments monument in Pioneer Park in the 1970s. Of all of Pleasant Grove's beautiful beauti-ful public places, this park is undoubtedly un-doubtedly the most obscure a small lot rucked in behind Cherished Moments on 105 S. 100 East. It's not very accessible, and the rose garden is its only appeal In fact, I'd be willing to wager that fewer than a fourth of Pleasant Grove residents could find the park or the monument. But this is where a Salt Lake-based group called Summum wants to place a similar monument monu-ment spelling out the Seven Summum Aphorisms, Apho-risms, because it is where the original monument monu-ment stands. Other communities where similar monuments were placed by the Eagles in the 1970s have opted to move those plaques onto private property, making Pleasant Grove's park the ority alternative. Pleasant Grove has appealed a 10th Court of Appeals ruling that would force the dry to allow Summum to place their monument next to the Ten Commandments. The U S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear Pleasant Grove's appeal ap-peal which couM be the set up for a landmark decision on freedom of speech. Summum, which characterizes itself as a philosophy, rather than a religion, is based out of a copper-colored pyramid located at 700 West between 800 and 900 North, just west of 1-15. According to Summum. the Aphorisms were given to Moses on Mount Ararat, but were destroyed when Moses came down from the mountain and found the Children of Israel in rebeSion. Moses returned to the mountain, and came back th the Ten CommandmenTs. So 1 is natural, Summum argues, to place a monumer for both in the same put&c park. The legal argument, of course, is that if the dry is going to allow one group to place a re-tsgicus re-tsgicus monument on pdtkx: property, it must INVOLVED ways to lend a hand to Utah County babies and toddlers tod-dlers with special needs, and their families. Volunteer coordinator coor-dinator Kathy Leedom said the organization has a lot of volunteers volun-teers from Utah Valley State College, Brigham Young University, Uni-versity, and area high schools who help with child care while parents are in classes and support sup-port groups. Services also include in-clude home visits; resource materials; ma-terials; therapy; and assistance with health, development, and nutrition issues. "Parents call meand say, 'I'm so thrilled with the progress prog-ress of my child. I want to thank you.' I get calls like that all week long," said Leedom. Elder Quest provides special spe-cial classes and field trips for individuals 55 and older. Fran Reiser of Orem is an ad hoc committee member who is in charge of the field trips to places like the state capitol the Bingham mine, and the cathedrals cathe-drals of Salt Lake City. " Elder Quest is so wonderful," wonder-ful," Reiser said. "I retired from school teaching nine years ago. and this has stimu over your head," he said. Lanita Evans, mother of the three Bee A Beekeeper grand prize winners, said the program pro-gram has been a thrilling experience ex-perience for her kids. She said they spent a whole week just crafting their essays and have been busy as, well their bees, ever since. "This is something they've wanted to do and now they have some help," she said. "I think it's fantastic ..." Lanita Evans said there are too many kids these days who ing at the group homes "will be striving for a better life." He said the restriction of six individuals per home "makes it hard to grow and expand the program," and also suggested the number be raised to eight. Council member Karen Mc-Candless Mc-Candless declined saying she did not feel comfortable raising rais-ing the number above six or basing the number allowed on a home's square footage. "I think six is very generous." gener-ous." she said. Councilman Carl Hernandez said the city should use an en Marc Haddock THE EDITOR'S COLUMN ill lated my brain. OREM BRIEFS STATUE UNVEILING AT NIELSEN'S GROVE The unveiling unveil-ing of a new statue of Jorgen Nielsen will be held Thursday, April 17, at 2 p.m. at Nielsen's Grove Park, 1931 South Sandhill Sand-hill Road in Orem. Nielsen was the Danish immigrant im-migrant who founded the pioneer-era Nielsen's Grove on the same site, providing a place for picnics, dancing, and other recreational rec-reational opportunities in the late 1800s. Today's Nielsen's Grove Park was built by the city to incorporate elements of the original park including decorative fountains, gardens, picnic nooks, and a unique, man-powered swing. The museum that was built as a replica of Nielsen's farm house will be open for tours from 2 to 4 p.m. on the day of the unveiling. THE PRINCIPLE OF GENDER "Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles; Gender manifests on aS levels." - Summum Pool Continued from Page I W. 165 South. "We want it safe for little kids and those learning to swim," he said. The ultra-violet rays emitted emit-ted in the pools' water filtration filtra-tion system kill the protective covering around the parasites' eggs that carry the disease, said Lissy Sanders, Orem's recreation facilities manager. "It basically sunburns the spores," she said. Cryptosporidosis, a parasite that can cause long-lasting long-lasting diarrhea typically transmitted from fecal matter mat-ter in swimming pools, is the culprit. Fecal matter from someone infected with the parasite gets into the water. A swimmer then swallows or gets the infected water in his mouth in the pool. Though most pools are normally chlorinated at 3 to 5 parts per million, pools "super "su-per chlorinated" up to 10 ppm monthly and "hyper-chlorinated up" to 20 ppm to kill the parasites following a pool contamination. Orem's UV treatment systems sys-tems will cycle through the water in both pools at least two times a day and as often as every two to three hours as opposed to weekly hyper chlorinations last year. Similar Simi-lar to a system installed in the American Fork swimming pool and others being considered con-sidered by cities around the county, the UV technology has another benefit, Sanders said. It requires less chlorine to kill bacteria and significantly signifi-cantly reduces the amount of a chlorine by product in the water called chloramines, that cause skin, eye and lung irritation, foul odor, and swimmer's asthma. While applauding the proactive approach Orem and other cities are taking to prevent future crypto cases, Lance Madigan, a Utah County Health Department spokesman, said that in confronting con-fronting a highly contagious disease like crypto that can infect waters in a matter of minutes, no pool bacteria killing kill-ing system is foolproof. 'As soon as someone enters the pool and is sick or has an accident, it takes, depending on the pooL 2 to 3 hours at best before it's clean," he said. "These are a great addition but they're not a complete answer." Madigan, Hirst and Sanders agree the other indispensable side of the crypto prevention preven-tion equation lies in personal responsibility and educating ' adults and children. Getting everyone onboard with practicing prac-ticing proper pool hygiene, they say, is the only sure way to minimize contaminations in public pools. "Ultimately, we have to have the public buy in to and participate to be really effective effec-tive on that," Madigan said. At Orem pools, patrons will begin seeing posters, signs, and online information about crypto, how the UV treatment system helps, and how swimmers swim-mers can do their part. "People need to be patient and responsible for it to work," she said Orem has also purchased 300 pairs of the reusable plastic plas-tic outer pants it will require those in diapers to wear at its pools to be sold to patrons at cost for $5. Hirst said though there were no crypto cases at Orem public pools documented document-ed by the county health department, de-partment, he is certain infected infect-ed individuals used the pools at various times last summer. The ban cut significantly into Orem pool attendance and revenues last fall which averages aver-ages nearly 200,000 patrons annually at the Scera Park Pools alone. But in acting to prevent a repeat of last year's statewide state-wide epidemic, Orem officials feel they can protect patrons and residents. "We're not burying our heads," Hirst said.
