I found Balboa Park and enjoyed many visits there to see light operas and hear organ concerts. A friend and I took a few dance lessons and spent some evenings dancing at the YMCA and other places, including the Palladium in Hollywood, where we heard the Harry James band. My favorite thing to do on the weekend was to go to the radio shows in Hollywood. 1 saw the Jack Benny Show several times and other stars, including Phil Harris, Danny Thomas, Dean Martin, Edgar Bergman, Tony Martin and Jo Stafford. The shows were free and we were welcomed to provide pro-vide an applauding audience. Bob Hope brought a terrific ter-rific show to the base once. He walked on stage with a long string of medals hanging down in front of him and behind him. Most of his jokes were aimed at the officers, so the sailors went wild. I enjoyed singing in the base chapel choir and in a Presbyterian Presbyte-rian choir in Coronado. Coro-nado Coro-nado also had a beautiful clean and quiet l)each where I spent some time. Meanwhile back at the base I was doing different things and enjoying them. I cleaned teeth for three months and then was transferred to dental surgery. The surgeon was very skilled and good to work with. Then one day after I had been at North island for little more than a year, the warrant officer came into our office and said, "Ridenhour, pack your bags, you're going to the dental prosthetic school in Bainbridge, Md." 1 shouted for joy. I had applied ap-plied for the school but had not expected to get it. At the time I was thinking about going to dental schcxil after the Navy, and I wanted all the schooling I could get. And I became u Mormon just a month before my discharge from the Navy. My Navy years were a great learning and transitional period for me. I think I grew up u lot.
