Show attracting ATTENTION deaf and blind from ogdan at the state pair the school for tho deaf and blind lh making an exhibit at tho state tail under the direction of prof driggs not the least interesting feature of the fair is the work ot the pupils in athla exhibit the fair visitor sees the deaf child speak and the blind child see the crowds that have clustered around the exhibit during the past two days are augmented in every five minutes the exhibit consists of samples ot work of various departments of the institution hand made shoes from the shoe shop furniture from the cabinet shop tools and chains from the black amith shop a gown from the dressmaking class bottled fruit put up by the domestic science classes dailies doilies and centerpieces work crayon charcoal and art drawings shawls and knit and crochet work by the blind samples of printing from tho typo department and a map of south america in putty by one ot the blind kuprs not the least interesting exhibits are two gold medals won by the pupils at the st louis worlds calr and at the state fair here four years ago but essentially the most interesting part of the exhibit to lue layman is the dally demonstration which Is held during the life of the fair at 11 a m 2 p m 4 and 8 p m here may be been a class ot beven year old deaf children danly enough to be understood by everybody and understanding by reading the lips what the teacher has to say these little boys read and write as readily aa any pupils ot their age they have been in the institution one year and their progress during this time has been marvelous they greatly pleased president mcdonald by speaking very clearly his name when it was written upon the blackboard the class of four lelnd pupils also gives a demonstration consisting of two beginners and two from the eighth grade these children seem to have gray matter in their anger tips from the manner in which they see tho raised dots upon the printed page with their finger tips the siem ot writing and reading is the american bralic with this system boons of all kinds including mathematics music and classics are printed ty united states government and furnished to all institutions for the blind gratis one of the most wonderful exhibitions given was by janle mcclelan 0 dempkey ida this young jadv took a strange machine a new remington typewriter and wrote a sentence as neatly as the best typist could and in practically the same time another feature ot the exhibition will bo a duet on the violin and piano between thomas biddulph ot hooper utah and janio maccleuan eUan as soon as the piano arrives this evening in addition there was a demonstration on the part of deaf pupils of the sixth and eighth grades on oral and manual work lyom first to last the demonstration impresses the spectator with the idea that the state institution at ogden is in every ot the word a school and nob an as the heedless often refer to it the classes are under alic tuition ot miss frances N beddy who was with the boys and girls at the st louis and portland fairs jean cox and max V woodbury on thursday morning the babies will go down from ogden and how what they can do in the way of reading and writing tho classes are stopping at the southern hotel |
