Show CONCRETE BLOCKS TO BE ON THE commissary historic old engine doing service in pumping water from basement from thursdays standard although the new building of the oregon short line now being erected at end of the present union depot has been mentioned many times in these columns every day seems to bring up some new interesting feature in connection with its construction the work of casting concrete blocks 19 progressing nicely and Is more of an undertaking than was at first anticipated these castings are of concrete placed ln forms and when dried make a foundation for the brick work than do the cut stone blocks with this exception the brick and water columns will be the same as on the present union station the brick masons are now at work on the basement or the building but will be at a standstill when this portion has been completed on account of ane cement stone blocks having to oe thoroughly dry which takes almost two weeks another car of cast iron was received today but the most important material is yet to come being the lumber engine no 1013 which is being used as a boiler to pump the water from the basement has somewhat of a history this engine was one of the first to be used in the west being brought from the east by water and was used in freight and passenger service on the central pacific there are only two of these engines now in existence and the railroad men have given each a name the 1013 la called goliath and the other chica Is at the present time in sacramento ie called samson some months ago it was decided to use the samson tor scrap and the engine was taken into the sacramento shops tor this purpose but such strenuous objections were made by the engineers and employed emp loyes in general to the officials that they have decided to keep these two engines as relics almost every day passengers en route through ogden are told of the history of this engine and the camera is often pressed into service |
