Show Volume II, Issue XX THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 5 October 15, 2000 How To Have A Happy And Safe Halloween The U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Trick-or Treat for UNICEF campaign this Halloween. To mark this occasion, they would like to make certain your little ghosts and goblins receive more treats than tricks by following these helpful safety tips: • Have your children carry a flashlight: in many areas of the country, it gets dark fast. • Have them wear bright colors so drivers can see them. Check out reflective tape and see if you can put this on their costumes. • Have your children travel with friends in groups; be sure to have an adult go with youngsters. • Make sure you instruct them to never go to, or enter, a stranger’s home. • See that your kids choose costumes that allow them to see clearly through their masks; or have them painted-on with make-up that won’t obstruct their view. • Make sure your kids know to look BOTH WAYS before crossing the street. • Tell them the importance of not eating any treats until a parent examines them; make sure the wrappers on all candies are secure and not opened. • Tell them to be polite when Trick-orTreating. • Explain why Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF helps others, and give examples of how contributions can help kids around the world, so that they in turn can tell others when they Trick-orTreat. • Remind them to thank everyone they ask, even people who do not donate. UNICEF has been helping kids help kids around the world since 1950. To find out how your children can be a part of this effort, call 1-800-252-KIDS or visit www.unicefusa.org to get more information and to order a free orange UNICEF collection carton.
