Job Fair Planned at Snowbasin— St. Florence Catholic Church held a picnic at Huntsville Park to honor its 20th anniversary. Art Stroll Slated at Gallery 25 Roberta Glidden will be the featured artist for the month of October at Gallery 25. She will be showing her new work at a reception during the First Friday Art Stroll on October 1, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The artist states, “Most of the paintings in this exhibit represent initial impressions of landscapes I witnessed this summer. My process is to make a small (8 x 10”) plein air (outdoor) study of a scene that grabs my attention. I look for a clear point of interest and a good lead-in where there is an inviting fore, mid and background. Mainly I am looking for accurate value and color relationships. I am experienced enough at this point to push the features around and eliminate elements that distract from the main idea to achieve a dynamic design. My goal is to capture the feeling of the place—the season, time of day, weather—the excitement of being there at that moment. Every time I set up my easel outdoors and get past the start-up rituals, I feel my heart beat faster as I discover new features of the chosen view—like a pink cloud or a blue shadow tracing meadow flowers—that I hadn’t seen at first. The constantly changing light can be an irritation or a dance. I work small so I have a chance to capture the fleeting morning or coming storm. I watch the once-blue mountain change to gold and remind myself that the mountain is just the stage for the dramatic play of light and air, my real subjects. I have to admit that many of these studies are directly from photos taken during recent trips to the Utah desert, Oregon coast, Colorado Springs, and my second home in Jackson Hole. My plein air experience gives me insight into the photos so I can fill in blanks; however, the colors are never accurate. Still, I love taking pictures and how else can you get that deer to hold still? Most of these landscapes represent a first stage toward developing a larger image, my task for painting in the studio when it is too cold to go out. Another studio activity is painting from models or fashion imagery, quite a different direction. My background is in textile design and fashion accessories (silk painting) so I will always have a fascination with haute couture a la Vogue, etc., though one would never guess it given my usual attire of paint spattered jeans. Maybe the link is a passion for dramatic design no matter what the subject.” Continuing artwork will also be on display by gallery members Lucile Chamberlin, Keith Dabb, Lauri Eskelson, Carol Fielding, Phil Hopkins, Dan Ludwig, Liz Pierce, Mac Stevenson, and Doug Wride.
