Carver, Linda Gillespie, Bonnie Knobla, Flint Guthrie, Ruth Monahan, Brent Christensen, Tammera Brown, Beth Porter, and Cindy Heatherly. Along with the committee, many others contributed to the success of the event. For the past seven years, Jeff Jordan has generously and efficiently handled garbage control Quality First duty, gratis. John Storey assisted garbage patrol as part of his eagle scout project. John’s family helped out too. Linda Gillespie stated, “Everyone on the committee was so grateful to see all their hard work pay off and to see all these people having a great time. About 30 people participated in Fest’s First Fun Run. The course started and finished at the Eden Park. About 2000 breakfasts were served over the Balloon Fest weekend. Meals were free for the pilots and all staff and volunteers. The Eden Park committee stated that, accounting wise, the weekend event should put the park in the black again. The Balloon Fest is sponsored by the Eden Park Service District, with proceeds supporting the maintenance and improvement of the Eden Community Park. Sponsors are needed for next year’s August 2002 event. Proceeds from sponsors go towards fireworks, fuel for the balloons, lodging for the pilots, and entertainment. If you would be interested in getting involved, or would like to volunteer at future events, contact an Eden Park Committee member at 745-1465, or visit the park website that will soon be online at www.4edenpark.com. Again, many thanks to all the sponsors, supporters, food suppliers, balloonists and the myriad of volunteers who made this year’s event a success. Licensed & Insured Nordic Valley Residents Asked to Participate in Fuel Reduction Program Much of the Nordic Valley area is considered a moderate fire hazard environment. As the number of people living in the area grow, the likelihood of homes being threatened by wildfire also grows. A critical factor in determining whether or not a home will survive a wildfire is the type, amount, and maintenance of vegetation surrounding the house. Our ability to live safely in this environment depends upon our “prefire activities.” Pre-fire activities are actions taken before a wildfire occurs which improves the survivability of people and homes. They include proper vegetation management around the home (known as defensible space), use of fire demonstrates that pre-fire activities save lives and property. Some individuals incorrectly assume that a fire engine will be parked in their driveway and firefighters will be actively defending their homes if a wildfire approaches. During a major wildfire, it is unlikely there will be enough firefighting resources available to defend every home. In these instances, firefighters will likely select homes they can safely and effectively protect. Even with adequate resources, some wildfires may be so intense that there may be little firefighters can do to prevent a house from burning, if “prefire activities” have not been completed. The key is to reduce fire intensity as a wildfire nears the house. This can be accomplished by reducing the amount of flammable vegetation surrounding a home. Consequently, the most important person in protecting a house from wildfire is you! And it’s the action taken by you before the wildfire occurs that is critical.
