Show Volume III, Issue IX THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 11 March 1, 2001 A Number of Buildings Vandalized in Huntsville Ogden Valley Branch Library Art Exhibit: Ralph Keopple Ralph Keopple’s first experience with wood was forty-four years ago when he took a class at Weber College and built a bookcase. His next project was building the family home. With a floor plan on a piece of type paper, he constructed everything from the walls to the kitchen cabinets. Ralph’s woodworking shop started with a one-room building made with lumber from Southwick’s Saw Mill near Monte Cristo. Over the years it has grown from one room to a good size building. Since Ralph’s retirement ten years ago, he has been able to purchase a lot of nice equipment. He has built beds, tables, rocking chairs, clocks, porch swings, computer desks, entertainment units, Christmas tree ornaments, and toys. Come see his exhibit at the library from February 12 through March 30. Sometime during late Tuesday night or early Wedneday morning, a number of Huntsville public buildings and a local business were vandalized. According to Sgt. Ryon Hadley of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, detectives are investigating the incidents, but no arrests have been made. They believe thethe crimes were committed by the same people. Gang activity is a countywide problem. In less than 5 years the number of known gangs has risen from 37 to 91. Mayor Mc Kay of Huntsville stated, “The gang problem is like the drug problem--it’s not going to go away.” Ogden Valley Book Discussion Group - Sees Behind Trees The Ogden Valley Branch staff would like to invite all readers, young and old, to attend an interesting discussion of Michael Dorris’ Sees Behind Trees (Reading Level: Ages 9-12). Michael Dorris wrote for both children and adults. His books have won several awards. Sees Behind Trees was his last novel for young readers before his tragic death in April 1997. The author remembers that when he was “ . . . growing up—as a person of mixed American Indian and European ethnic heritage, who, more than anything else, loved to read—I rarely encountered Native American fictional characters with whom I could identify . . . I decided that if I were going to write stories about children who happened to be Indians, the characters would have to—in addition to being Indians—also be fully invested children.” Sees Behind Trees is a short novel about Walnut, a young Powatan Indian, whose limited sight makes it impossi- ble to hit a target with his bow and arrow and earn a grown-up name. His other senses, however, are highly developed and he discovers that he can see “what cannot be seen.” This ability earns him the name Sees Behind Trees. Nevertheless, he has to learn that there is more to becoming an adult than receiving a name when he is invited to go on a journey to a mysterious land of water. The Children’s Book Discussion Group will start discussing Sees Behind Trees on Monday, March 5, at 6:30 p.m. Participants can pick up a copy of the book at the Library between February 19 and March 5. It is recommended that participants start reading the book before the first meeting. We will continue discussing the book on Monday, March 12, 19, and 26, at 6:30 p.m. For a list of other book discussions, please contact the Ogden Valley Branch Library at 745-2220. Some of the grafitti spray painted on a public building in Huntsville. If you have any information about these incidents, please call the Weber County Sheriff’s Office at 745-2540.
