Show Volume II, Issue XX THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 17 October 15, 2000 Remember Not to Forget By Janet Hoffmann Last night as the video we were watching ended, we heard my dad’s walker moving around downstairs. We were all sitting in the family room on the main level of the house and mom was asleep in the basement, or at least we thought she was. But who was moving Dad’s walker around then? He needs assistance to walk, let alone get himself into a standing position from his bed. Was mom awake and helping him? I thought we had finally convinced her not to help him up without one of us there. He could fall and hurt both of them. Had we caught her in the act? My husband went downstairs to investigate. He found Dad sitting in his chair with his over-sized pajama bottoms hanging around his angles. He was trying to pull his pants up when my husband walked into the General Knowledge: Getting Better Gas Mileage With gas prices on the rise and family budgets in a pinch, fuel conservation is a key concern. These fuel efficient tips from the experts at General Tire, a brand of Continental General Tire, Inc., should help put motorists on the road to economy. An Ounce of Prevention— Maintaining the engine is the first and most important step in conserving gas. Taking steps as simple as replacing filters and fluids when needed and fixing minor problems as they arise will prevent larger, more costly issues in the future. A healthy engine burns less fuel than a neglected one. Lighten Your Load and Avoid Heavy Traffic—The more weight a car has to carry, the more fuel it requires. Also, taking unnecessary trips—especially in heavy traffic—wreaks havoc on the fuel system. Consolidating errands and traveling when traffic is light are easy ways to stretch gasoline dollars. Smooth is Smart—Sudden acceleration and abrupt stops wears away at brakes and wastes fuel. Also, keeping tires aligned properly and maintaining optimum levels of air pressure are important because tire problems waste fuel. When the car has to work too hard to move, gas is squandered. Driving smoothly ultimately saves money. Don’t Stand Idly By—Letting the engine run is a waste of gas. Shutting the car off for a few moments may not seem like much, but over time, a little conservation here and there adds up to a considerable amount of gas and money saved. Apparently Dad had gotten himself up out of bed and, because of his weight loss, his pants had fallen down. Dad explained that he had gotten out of bed to turn the VCR off, which he had accomplished. We were all amazed that he could get himself out of bed and walk across the room, turn off the VCR and walk back to his chair. The next morning I said, “Dad show me how you got yourself up last night.” He tried to push himself up to a sitting position with no success. After I watched him struggle for about five or ten minutes I decided he wasn’t going to get up unless I helped him. Now explain that to me. I asked his therapist how he could have gotten out of bed on his own and walked across the room. He answered, “Maybe he enjoys people helping him or maybe he forgets he knows how to walk. I thought about how we all have talents but we forget we have them. Obviously, physically, my dad can stand up and walk by himself but mentally he believes he can’t. It doesn’t matter that he is capable. If he believes he can’t get up and walk, then he can’t. What things have you forgotten? Life is too short to not be spending time doing what is important, just because we have forgotten how. Do we let fear make us forget what we can accomplish? If we do, then we need to remember and let go of our fears. Well, I’m going to put my money where my mouth is. I need to remember that I can do what it takes to be healthy. I’m going to work harder to exercise more, eat right and find more solutions to my health problems. This is a stupid thing to tell you. Now you are going to expect to see me looking healthier—the pressure’s on. So now I’m creating fear for myself—fear that if I don’t get healthy, you will all know how weak I am! Well I need to get over my fears. Right? ever it was called and the book on eating right. I must confess—I read the book and watched the video. Did I learn anything new? No. Even though I didn’t waste any money, I did waste my time. I heard and read things I already knew. Dad is wasting his physical ability to walk and I’m wasting my knowledge and ability to become healthy. What are you wasting? What are you forgetting? Look in the mirror tonight and see what you need to remember. Then see if you can bring it back to your mind and do it. When you succeed, let me know. I hope I feel healthier soon, and I hope you remember what is important to you. GOOD LUCK TO US ALL! Vote on Tuesday November 7th It has been my honor and privilege to serve you and your family in the State Legislature. A lot of good things have been accomplished and we are headed in the right direction, but there is still more we can do. The two things I always take with me to the legislature are a strong work ethic and plain old common sense. A prime example of this is when I voted NO on House Bill 320, the so-called utility company rate bill. Simply put, it was bad legislation and not in your best interest.
