People to People Student Ambassador Requests Pledges I am Jackie Snyder. I am the granddaughter of Marvin and Madelyn Evans. I am ten years old and am in the 5th grade. I have been given the special opportunity to be a Student Ambassador with People to People. T h e People to People program was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was a man of vision who believed that the only way to prevent conflict Jackie Snyder was to build international understanding, one person at a time. He believed, “The people want peace. Indeed, I believe they want peace so badly that the governments will just have to step aside and let them have it.” President Eisenhower called a conference of 100 American civic leaders, including Walt Disney, Joyce Hall, Conrad Hilton, Jesse Owens, and Norman Rockwell. Together they started the People to People program, which would put ordinary people in contact with citizens from other lands. In 1963, the first delegation of Student Ambassadors went forth, forging new friendships. After they returned, inspired by their goals and aspirations, Walt Disney opened the timeless attraction “It’s a Small World.” People to People is now run by Mary Eisenhower, granddaughter to President Eisenhower; his dream continues. My delegation will be traveling to Australia to study for 16 days. We will spend time in their school system as well as time at the Great Barrier Reef, the Opera House, and the Outback, experiencing first hand the Aboriginal Culture where I will be able to try my hand at playing the didgeridoo. I am really excited about this opportunity, and look forward to sharing it with you when I get back. However, I need your help to get there. To help with the cost, I will be doing a Read-A-Thon from December 15, 2003 to May 31, 2004, and ask that you pledge just 1 or 2 pennies for every page I read (if you want to pledge more, that is ok too.) That is 24 weeks of reading, and my goal is to read 200 pages a week. After each book, I will send you a book report so you know what I am reading. I can collect pledges after each book, once a month; or pledges can be mailed to me at 2727 S. 4550 W., Taylor, UT 84401, which ever you prefer. Please fill out and return the pledge card, so I know I can count on your support. Thank you for your help with my ReadA-Thon to help me earn my way to becoming a Student Ambassador. Love Jackie Read-A-Thon Pledge Card I/We ______________________pledge _______per page to Jackie, from Dec. 15, 2003 to May 31,2004 for her Student Ambassador program. Please send my book reports and pledge totals to: ____________________________ ____________________________ (Email or street address) Sixth Grade Students Say “Thanks” Valley students would like to thank the community for their generosity in donating so many items to help boys and girls club youth provide gifts for their family members. Three huge truck loads of clothing, household goods, books, toys, blankets, and more made their way December 3 to the Iomega Boys and Girls Club site for their Christmas give-away. The delighted and excited looks of kids as they helped unload the gifts were great. Kids would exclaim to directors, “I want this for my mom!” Or, “Oh, put my name on that for my brother!” “Wow! This one is for me!” Thank you for giving gifts that were in excellent condition. You made the holidays brighter for many. Valley Elementary 6th graders Bureau of Reclamation Continues to Expand Pineview Dam Project as a “Make Work” Project for Construction Buddies The Army Corps of Engineers recently got busted for brazenly becoming more creative in justifying a $1 billion project on the Mississippi to “improve navigation and the environment on the upper Mississippi.” A close review of the model used to justify the expenditures showed it to be primitive and totally out of touch with reality. When all the justifications were reviewed by objective third parties, it was exposed as a strictly “make work” project disguised as a “public works” project. See the full story at http://politics.slate.msn.com/id/2090978/ The Bureau of Reclamation has been showing the same tendencies by continually expanding work scope on the backside of Pineview Dam. “We have not spent all the money yet so we need to expand the project until we do.” (Your Tax Money at Waste!) In this opinion, the justification for protecting Canyon residents from a 8 to 9 level earthquake is academic from the standpoint that, after a quake of that magnitude, there will probably be multiple dams created in the canyon from all the mountain sides sliding down into the river.
