Isn’t there something to relieve the sore throat? How long will it last and how will I know if I’m recovered? Will it interfere with sports activity? — CN Infectious mononucleosis is a viral disease and there is effective treatment for only a very few viral illnesses Mono is not one of them Rest fluids and a complete diet is about the only therapy Aspirin or Tylenol will help keep a temperature down and relieve the aches and pains For the sore throat you can r gargles A gargle with the try numbing agent xylocaine is also used The length of time you’ll be out depends on how sick you were with the illness I know this is not a very satisfactory answer but it is the only one I can give Mono can be so mild that a person feels fine in a week or two it can be so severe that it takes months to get back on one’s feet How you feel is more important than laboratory tests in determining when you have recovered Don’t let your mind overrule your body in making that determination You should be free of fever Otherwise blood tests should indicate that you are on the mend Don’t overdo as soon as you begin feeling well If your spleen was enlarged you should avoid physical sports until it returns to normal Your doctor can inform you about that salt-wate- DEAR DR DONOHUE I have a cataract in one eye but 0 vision in the other I do not have trouble seeing but am wondering how long before the cataract should be removed I’m not overanxious for surgery but people keep asking me when the doctor is going to remove the cataract What do you say? — : 20-2- DR There is no hurry to have the clouded lens removed In fact you may never actually need the surgery if you don’t mind the cataract and if the other eye continues to serve you well Delaying surgery does not affect the outcome whenever you have it done The next time you’re asked say “When my doctor and I think it best for me the cataract will be removed” See the booklet “Cataracts and disGlaucoma” which has a more 35 cents and a cussion For a copy send to me care envelope stamped of this newspaper in-dep- self-address- ed th or turquoise-whit- navy-whit- e e sizes $112 in Fashion Dresses 6-1- 6 The Spirited Spectator it's new it’s now and we can't wait to see you it’s here wear it! 25 C IVd I |
