Show BORAH'S BILL TO BENEFIT SETTLERS WASHINGTON. Nov. 30 A bill was Introduced by Senator Borah yesterday yes-terday granting to settlers on government govern-ment land a year's extension of time in which to make payment of construction con-struction charges The bill is Identical !wlth the extension act passed by the last session of congress. This bill, coupled with the McNary bill introduced several days ago, proposing pro-posing a three-year exemption, has attracted at-tracted the attention of eastern no libers li-bers who have been none too frlendl to reclamation extension, ,md there I ffeni rod inquiry as to why congress should be aske.j to appropriate j.",o.-O00 j.",o.-O00 for building more reclamation projects when It is apparent from these bills that settlers on existing projects arc not making enough money to payl their annual construction charges that amount to only 5 per cent of the cost. In virtually defeating the Llberlan loan bill Monday, the senate defeated, defeat-ed, for this congress, the Borah amendment proposing a reclamation loan of $20,000,000. and now the proposals pro-posals for extension of time have furnished fur-nished new ammunition for those who are opposing the Smlth-McN'ary reclamation rec-lamation bill. It Is quite evident that the Bmith-McNarj bill and all other reclamation oxtenBlon legislation Is doomed to defeat during the Short session ses-sion of congress It Is even doubtful j If congress will again extend the time for paying construction charges, and! It Is absolutely certain that the house at least will not pass the McNary three-year exemption bill. If any further extension of time is granted it will be for not more than one year. oo |
