There is only one outlet to it. Part of I be men have been saved; no particulars have yet been obtained, but it seems to be a repetition of the Avon-dal- e catastrophe. The feeling about tbe shaft is one of great distress aud anguish ; two fire engines, one from Scran- ton, and one from V ilksbarre are on the ground. It is thought no water will be thrown intn the shaft from the top, but it is said tbe shaft will fill with water within so that even if they are not suffocated, the poor miners mnst be drowned ; there is ap parently no escape for them. From 35 to 40 men and boys are in the mine. Later: The fire engines are playing on the ruins, which are so hot that no one can possibly approach them before morning. A dog has just been sent down tho shaft of the mine, and was brought up nlWe, which encourages the belief that tue men may yet be saved. It has now been ascertained to a cer tainty that S3 men are down in the mine. William Lowe, mining engineer for tbe Pennsylvania Coal Company, was lowered a distance of twenty-fiv- e feet, as far as he could penetrate with safety, and when drawn up, reported the air at that distance below the surface, favorable for the men entombed below.
